These 2 watches:

Used Plat YachtMaster - the fact that you can buy this beauty used but mint for a little over 5k is incredible. MSRP is nearly 12k and it's such a gorgeous, versatile and refined piece.

GMT Master II - the fact that you can take a classic like this and swap the bezel out to Pepsi, Coke, or black to give it 3 different looks. Not to mention it looks great on a NATO and Jubilee bracelet. Id say this is probably the best bang for your buck in the Rolex lineup. Best value, hands down.

MilSub...

I know, I know, it sounds crazy, BUT...

Expensive as they may be I genuinely feel they offer the best VALUE. The look, the history, the rarity. They just can't be beat!
I also genuinely believe that the cost would be as good as money in the bank. Even with the global economy as it is they are still holing/increasing in value. As the years go by they will only become rarer so I genuinely believe they are the best value Rolex available. Some tenants I have in a little house at the moment are making rumblings about moving and I am giving more than passing thought to selling the house if they do and putting most of the dough into a MilSub!

In the meantime, I agree with a lot of people above who have said 14060m.

Best bang is the explorer II as they can be had in the mid $3,000 range, pretty good price for a Rolex and you have the choice of 2 dial colors

Followed closely by the 16710 GMT, little more expensive and can still be found for sub $4k.

16610, the 14060, or the Sea Dweller would be my choices.

This is my first post here, and man, you know it's a Rolex forum when everyone is referring to the watches by their ref numbers. Haha. But personally, I'd have to say that the 116334 (Datejust II Steel/White Gold.) At least you're getting some gold for your high-dollar watch and not all SS. (I'd still buy a 16610 first though.)

I agree that GMT's, especially used, are an awesome value right now -- I like GMT Masters even more than Master II's actually.

"Best value" to me often means, "What's rare and cool that the Rolex WIS community doesn't particularly care for (yet)?" Because, given enough time, things that are rare enough will inevitably increase in value.

There are 4 watches in particular I can't help but think are undervalued (I own #1-2 so far):

1. Root Beer GMT's with all-brown bezel inserts. These "mocha" inserts seem much, much more rare than 2-tone Root Beer inserts, yet they don't currently command any premium. I rarely if ever seem to see good mocha inserts for sale.

2. Air Kings with random company logos, etc. I think these are interesting, historically, especially since Rolex no longer makes this type of thing.

3. Zephyrs (1008's) - Crosshair dial adds obvious uniqueness; bezel is also unique. IMHO just about everything under 40mm is undervalued these days, but 34-36mm will have to come back in style eventually!

4. Barked Gold Day-Dates - I think I'm in the minority on this, but I love the look of barked bracelets/bezels. Their value is low right now because so many people simply don't prefer them, but I think it'll increase once people realize how rare they are.

GMT Master

1675 or 16750 (matte dial)

-3 different inserts to choose from... but technically hundreds of different types of inserts if you believe faded inserts to be different.

-History

-bracelet + Nato combinations galore.

4k to 4.5k will get you a very nice one.

Will never go out of style and will save your life if you are lost in the woods (compass).

Rolex Datejust Turn O Graph 116264, very slow seller & very reasonably priced. I think in a few years this watch will climb in value...
