IS this how sad this hype has made it ....

a small rant ....i will higlight with a piece of mine ..but it isnt about this watch, it is the prinicipal....

last week i got one of the nicest and most honest watches i've had in a long while. I've owned about 40 red subs and i would put this in the top 5 easily.

Its an original owner estate watch that judging from the patina has obviously lived many of its years in the drawer, the owner kept the original box and papers and judging from the inside caseback, the original style crown and tube and the internal screwheads ...he never had it serviced.., it has superb colouring to die for and dial is in A1 condition (by far THE most important thing on a red sub)... the watch is being passed on with the benefit of a full RSC service - something unatainable in USA and very expensive not to mention time consuming)....as an entry level collection piece in my opinion its as good as it gets ....and it reminded me of this thread to a tee...

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=212333

it is the barn find we all hope for ..... the watch is so nice i decided to use it for the pics for my strap sales....and sold nearly 60 in first 24 hrs with many comments how nice the red sub looked ...

IN the last three days since i listed it i've had a repeated conversation from new guys ...... if i had wanted to sell this watch i could have done in 20 mins i fudged the answer or out and out bent the truth ...as i notice repeatedly happening elsewhere....

having posted watch i have been asked is it unpolished ...'i've been told i should get an unpolished one' is the quote .....my honest answer ... 'i've not owned the watch from new so i cant say even if it was my opinion it wasn't polished', but after careful consideration my opinion however is that after looking at the watch that the factory lines on most edges are there but the bevel/chamfer is wider than i would expect it to be ( though i have seen a couple NOS the same) so to my mind i would feel more comfortable saying it been polished once. The lugs are super fat the guards are untouched to my eye ....and the clues we look for suggest it hasnt ......but lets be safe

the repsonse ...ok ...let me know when you get an unpolished one !!!!!

I need to say it ....guys get a grip !!!!...this hobby is going to leave you sitting on the sidelines if you buy into this crap ....a true honest unpolished watch is a one in one hundred thousand thing ...if such a thing comes up it will be :

a:) usually sold in private into the collection of someone who has bought 10-20 other watches from me or any other dealer in the past
b:) carry a premium that you wont want to pay or understand or feel is fair ....

and my POINT....

if 1 in 50 of the watches supposedly held up as unpolished by sellers and proud collectors actually are - i'd be amazed

just because you see people putting the words unpolished into their adverts or their posts week in week out ( or day in some cases) ....doesn't mean its true or mean its an easy or realistic goal...just like 12 mths ago when it was subtly pointed out to any with the ears to listen that box and paper sets didn't grow on street corners and real ones didnt sell for 20% less than market value week in week out on ebay ....

somehwere along the line ..the checklist that new buyers go through someone added the line is it unpolished instead of the real question which is of importance ..is it over polished ??.......because that line exists people who wouldnt know a polished from unpolished are asking the question ....and getting bullsh***d to day in day out .....the hype on the forums is allowing this to happen .....
