Nope, that was Arrayan, and I'm pleased to say he is very much alive and well!

Hector was about twice the height and the old sod would probably have given the girls "flying lessons" even at the age he was!

What a majestic animal. The horse lived a good life, and you did right by him at the end. I'm sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear that news Mark, your situation today is an example of the right decision to make is more often than not, the most difficult to fulfill. Your thread is reminder to me to cherish the time I spend with my cat (who is getting on for 16). I am dreading the day when I have to make that trip to vets. Fingers crossed it will be a few years yet.
Enjoy that drink tonight.

Cheers Paul.
It is tough to make the call. I've known the time was coming for a while and the cowardly part of me was hoping I'd just find him down in the field one day.

I hope you've got many happy years left with your moggy, mate!

So well stated. Sad as it is, having him linger beyond his time would have been even harder for everyone.

Peace.

I know it was hard. We come to love those that we accept responsibility for. A horse requires so much care. Day in, day out. They come first, even before your comfort and rest. You have to love something very much to give it so much of yourself. You were right in what you did. He last saw his home, and you. I'm sure that's all that mattered to him in his life.

I think what you did, Mark, was very noble. It shows both your personal character and love for your horse.

I almost feel bad prolonging this thread but I have to say how sorry I am.
I grew up around horses in Northeast PA and saw a couple race horses put down in my youth. Could never imagine a 23 year friend going down...but I guess we are all going, right?

I recently had to put down a family dog...Although I am Catholic and I am not quite sure what to think about this but...This was given to me by Vet after my dog was put down, on a little card.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Author unknown...

Its a nice thought...right?

Reminds me of "Of Mice and Men". Not trying to belittle your situation, on the contrary. You did the right thing, although I'm sure it wasn't easy.

It's been 25 years since I was "made" to read "Of Mice and Men" so I had to go Google the plot to make sure I wasn't crazy. How does Grumpy's story have anything to do with that book? No need to reply.

Mark, I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.....you did the noble deed and I'm sure Hector understood, he would not of wanted it any other way. You have been the best of friends and when Hector's original master succumbed to death you were selected and honored with Hector's presence. Now he leaves you to carry on in his absence.....and you will!!!
