In Ontario you expect to pay 13% GST (goods and services taxes) and 6% import duty.
That's the deal. I appreciate that many US and international sellers will ship to Canada and I don't make our regulations their problem. Lots of good buyers in Canada. |

Sounds like that's pretty much what he ended up paying.

hi max. liability... this is what i thought that this thread was about. being the decent person that he is mark decided to ask the members of the forum for their advice on how they thought that he should proceed with this matter. it is the fact that members on here go to the trouble to ask the opinions of the other members about thing like this that makes the forum imho such a nice and fair place.

I'm guessing buyers remorse, or stupidity. Actually, probably both.

Too bad and it is what it is--buyer pays import duties not seller.

I hate to to say it but the Canadian in this case is behaving badly and making an unreasonable fuss when he`s in the wrong especially after Mark went out of his way to ship the watch at his expense across the border.

I have the PM's saved, just in case he tries that. Funny, he never even mentions ANYTHING about the watch itself, not that he could... It's in pristine condition and he got a great price on it.

I appreciate all the responses guys. I was worried that maybe I was responsible for the fees, but I have shipped other watches to Canada, Indonesia, and other countries without ever hearing about this, so I wasn't sure.

It's always been the case that the buyer pays any import duties, why would he think otherwise? Anyways, you've given him a choice, either send the watch back (he pays shipping, and you refund him, less your shipping), or we wears the $50 import duty. Those should be his only choices, definitely don't offer him anything else, you've gone above and beyond your duty.

This is hard for me to read...
I'm not sure about the little detour this thread took...but as far as the main topic is concerned It upsets me because as many Fellow Canucks have said, this reflects poorly on us, and will be more motivation for US sellers to 'close the Borders'... THis kind of thing should go without saying...but it's like everytime I look at a tube of Preparation H -- I read the WARNING - NOT FOR INGESTION... Seems like a silly thing to have to warn people against...but the reason that warning is there, is because somewhere at some time, more than a few people tried brushing their teeth with this stuff... So in conclusion #1. Most Canadians Know full well that they will be charged Duty and Taxes... #2. Most of Canada's Population is clustered around the US border, so if he couldn't ship to a US address ( many people have gotten very rich creating businesses that sign for, and hold your 'ebay' and on-line purchases for a small fee (usually $5) ), he was either too lazy, stupid, or accepted the price in taxes and duty as a 'convenience Charge' #3. Don't let the Guy with Preparation-H on his breath stop you from engaging Canadians in the future... |

I had a watch sent to me in Japan. Sure enough customs opened it and charged me 30,000 Japanese Yen. About $350 for the release of the watch. I paid it without complaint. As this buyer should too.
