Not a tradition in my family. Cartier is. I asked my father on many occasions why he didn't have a Rolex. He said Cartier was much more refined and showed lots of class.

I did partake in the following coversation at one time :

Patek Phillipe, Audemars, .....Cartier are items that you find on "refined" individuals, reffered to as "old money", people that didn't need to let others know they had "made it" (in my lingo, now days I call these TRUST FUND BABIES).

The new wealthy (neuvo riche), life long savers, lotto winners, etc.., buy Rolex because they want others to know they have "made it" (or have maxed out the credit card ).

How many rolex owners dive beyond 200 feet?

I do plan on doing the "hand me down" thing.

Someday if I have a Son, he will get all my Rolex. If not my lazy Nephew will get them.

Its family tradition in my family. My grandfather gave his to my father and now may father has given it to me. I have acquired two others on my own as well. Since I do not have any sons, 4 daughters , I plan to give a watch to each of their oldest sons...that means I have one more to get...likely a Day-Date, but not for some time.

Thanks. I loved it from the moment I saw it and knew it was perfect for my Dad. I just got off the phone with him and he said that a lady in his bowling league today saw it and was very impressed that he had a Rolex. Hahaha. Good for him.

In my family it's been a long tradion. My great grandfather wanted one. My grandfather wanted one. My father wanted one and I wanted one for a long time. Now I have three and waiting for number four. When the fourth comes in it will take care of the whole everybody wanting one over the last 100 years.

Not really. My parents have them, but the rest of the family does not see any value in spending $$ on watches.

We came to the conclusion it's not how many rollies you can collect it's how many family members you can infect :).... and we enjoy seeing them on the family more than in the cases.

We might be doing some int'l work soon so we're looking at all of our material things a little diff these days..... sell the stuff that won't appreciate, spread out the rollies to the family.... and get ready for the NEXT big adventure..... KL might be in the picture :)

I'm the first in my family to wear a Rolex. My son will be the second whether he likes it or not.

Well, I guess my family is, now. When my father passed away earlier this year, he left his Date Just to my brother and a GMT Master II to me.

I'm the first in my family for owning a Rolex as well as getting a degree and a number of other firsts as well. My wife now is on her second Rolex. Number 1 daughter has one. Number 2 and 3 daughters will get one later (if they raise my grand children Republican) . I will give my dad one in April for his 79th birthday. Sons-in-law will have to fend for themselves!

Actually, I am probably the first person in my family that ever own a wrist watch, much less a Rolex.

Maybe I am the starter of a family tradition. I hope so!

I think Rolex runs in the veins of my family. A lot of them before me have owned one including my parents.

I guess that it explains how I go into it at such a young and early age.

The only watch my father ever cared about was given to him by his brother before he went off to serve in WWII. He was killed in action. My father cherished the watch, but it was stolen when his home was broken into several years ago. I think it was a Longines, but I am really just guessing. I saw it a long, long time ago. I bought a vintage watch similar to it when I was on a business trip to Buenos Aires about ten years ago, but I have never seen my father wear it. He just wears a no name watch.

As many TRF members know, I retired my original Sub a few years ago so I could give it to my son. He's only 11, but he cherishes it. He doesn't wear it, but he will often wear another one of my Subs for a day or two on weekends. But he loves it because he associates it with me.

I have thought about giving my Pepsi GMT-II to my older brother, but it really would not make a difference to him one way or another. So I have held off. Maybe someday. My daughter knows she can have her pick of my watches, but she seems equally disinterested.

Finally, my 16 year old step-son would take a Rolex in a heartbeat, but I would be hard-pressed to describe him as being very responsible. He is more into the "bling" factor. I am not about to give him an expensive watch just so he can show it off. However, he wants to join the Marine Corps. If he does, I will get him a suitable gift before he ships out overseas.

Our family tradition started with me. And it might end there. My son coveted one of my Casios, even though I hinted I might offer him one of my Rolexes.

I am ashamed of him. Here I taught him to drink good beer, the best single malt scotch, and all he wanted was a $50 Casio. Where did I go wrong?

My son is about to have a daughter (well, actually, his wife is). Maybe if my daughter has sons, I will earmark one or more of my collection for him/them.

Being fourth generation on my dad's side and third on my mom's side whose families both came to the US to work on plantations in Hawaii my brother (four Rolexes), myself (four Rolexes) and my cousin (one Rolex) have started the family tradition. I know that my father (a member of The Greatest Generation) could have afforded one if he wanted one but there is no way he would have spent that kind of money on himself.

If my dad were alive today he would be wearing a Rolex that I would have bought for him. However, I did give him a watch (Swiss Army) that was given to me on my 10th anniversary at the company I work for (hey it was a nice gesture) along with a note thanking him for all of his love and support throughout my life. I have no doubt that he cherished that watch as one of his most prized possessions during the remaining years of his life.
