I know I didn't get all the models and variations (metals/engines) and some were tough calls. Would welcome other views, and obviously there are no right and wrong answers.
Basically Rolex today is much like the car industry they use the same floor pan for several models just with a slightly different bodies and names. Most all of today's Rolex except for the Chronographs are based on one engine the cal 3135.Just add or take away complications like date, or add a date or day-date or second time zone feature. So today the only main difference in any Rolex, is body style W/R whether S.Steel, TT, or precious metal/diamonds and the price.

I own an Explorer II and an X3, and while it's a little off the list's mantra, I can see the similarities in mentality that drove me to buy each.

I have tons of fun with both!

Huge Rolex fan here but really (I love Rolex but I'm not pretending it's something equal to the others as far as ranking watches)...

There is a reason PP, VC, AP are widely considered the top watchmakers.

Thea threads don't do anything but try to compare apples to cows. Cool idea but never works.
Agreed... I was reaching. Swap PP and Rolex.

You can't really take yourself seriously if you say BMW is just a status symbol. All the while banging out on the keyboard wearing a $6500+ Rolex.

Just like Rolex, BMW has great brand history and a great product. I bought my BMW not for straight line speed but for handling. I live in the mountains of New Mexico and carving up curves on the weekends with a chassis so sorted it's nearly heaven on earth. It's great and I like it.

No one needs a BMW the same way none of us needs a watch that costs more than some people's cars in the first place. We buy our toys because they make us happy.

this has been around a while , though not as straightforward anymore as everybody seems to build sporty cars , SUVs and sedans now, Porsche for example

from http://www.asthewatchturns.com/?p=431

Omega : BMW

IWC : Porsche (although AMG is most fitting here due to their many partnerships)

JLC : Ferrari

Panerai : Audi

Vacheron Constantin : Maserati

Rolex : Mercedes

Hublot : Audi R Group

Patek : Rolls Royce

Audemars Piguet : Lamborghini

Seiko : Honda (honda makes a whole crapload of stuff from generators to heavy machinery like Seiko makes printers (Epson) and AC condensers)

Citizen : Toyota

Sinn : Lotus

Zenith : Saab

Jaguar : Bremont

Victorinox : Peugot

Montblanc : Samsung (Surprise they make cars too! Surprise Montblanc makes watches too!)

Invicta : Yugo

Baume et Mercier : Buick

Breguet : Bugatti

Hamilton : Ford

Tag Heuer : Volkswagen (really annoying early 20s guys in Golfs and Jettas, really annoying early 20s guys in Tag Carreras)

Grand Seiko : Lexus

Longines : Lincoln

Casio : Nissan

Breitling : Infiniti

Oris : Subaru

I couldn't disagree more. I don't think it's unfair to take your view & attempt to shoot down an entire brand. Numbers never lie & BMW was the number 1 selling luxury brand in North America for awhile I believe until last quarter when Mercedes edged across? Most can agree Mercedes & BMW will be flipping between a very tight 1 & 2 for quarters to come & Audi is definitely shooting way up with some very attractive new vehicles.

I've owned BMW's since I was 17 & never had a serious problem. However, when something minor has came up I have never paid a penny to fix it even if it wasn't covered under warranty. I have numerous family and friends with BMW's with the same experience and views. Just my opinion.

Agreed. Trying to compare a car brand to a watch brand is meaningless. Buy what you enjoy & enjoy what you buy. Whatever makes you smile...

[QUOTE=ndsleep612;3302163]A few of my friends drive BMWs and they've caused them nothing but problems.

A better comparison for Rolex would be Lexus. Those cars are known for luxury and reliability, similar to Rolex watches.[/

I disagree, perhaps Lexus can be compared to Tag not Rolex. Lexus just isn't on the same level with luxury and status as the Germans.

Dont know about the reasoning behind matching Rolex/BMW but in my case.....135i and Submariner because I own both and very happy with my decisions.

i'd say the sub is a 3-series. it's classic, reliable, built like a tank, and probably the most common of its kind (for good reason). and both put a smile on my face when i look at them, which is every day!
