Great story/thread....I work in the automotive field ,,technician +25yrs, I cannot wear
my watches @ work," I'd destroy them" lol,,, I happened to meet a few Dealer owners;
and I would comment on there timepieces.....they always have that "puzzeled look"
what's a mechanic know about watches, then I bring in some of my babies..lol
Funny how people perceive you by what you do for work.

Just after lunch today that same attorney was walking by with a couple of others and I waved hello. He stopped dead, walked over and said " Jesus you have a gold Rolex Submariner too!" (didnt correct him but its a GMT)

I decided to take the high road and began the conversation with telling him I am a watch nut, started collecting years ago with my Doxa's which he knew about because he told me he dove and after 10 minutes blabbing about watches, he goes, " I like you," hands me his card and says "give me an email or call next week and I will hook you up with my firms office manager."

So in effect, my AP and Rolex may have landed me a new client after all. He is still an arrogant guy but after talking with him for a bit, not as bad as I originally would have believed. He was wearing a Mont Blanc and said he had three watches in his collection but stated "none in your league".

So I guess the moral is, if I would have been as big of jerk as he was after his comments, I never would have had the chance to win him over so I am glad for the resulting outcome.

I should write a book someday... Haha!

Well played

Your first mistake was in being at an ABA conference.

I am not sure what the word is for it, but I hate being around other lawyers, as a general rule. As in, I would rather be shot again.

If they are good folks, I would like them anyway. But the problem is I always feel too often like they are wanting to sell me something (their resume) or impress me, or otherwise "network" and do all that other crap that I cant stand when really all I want to do is sip a beer, take the swag, smile, and get out of the way.

Yea I am a bit antisocial, maybe it comes from going to a 3rd tier school, or having to work my way through law school as a single parent, or being an ex cop or growing up in N Dallas society and hating all the rich prigs i went to school with. I guess I am not part of the tea and crumpets set.

Oh well. Sounds like you handled it with class. Well done.

Great story and well handled. High ground w/ a little edge is the way to go. I'm mid 30s and look 30 at the oldest on a good day and have a lot of ppl working for me that are in their 40s and 50s. I'm never shy about wearing my watches and think it actually helps me relate better to the client and internal execs I typically face off with.

I think you can get away with it in most any situation if handled with confidence and humility.

it looks like your good attitude towards poor comments stood out to the potential client. likely, he was testing your attitude more than anything.

i'm sure that your display of good taste in expensive watches made it clear that you are good at your job and deserve to make the money that you do.

David, thanks for the amusing story

While I hate stereotyping as much as you, you probably shouldn't pay to much attention to the guy. Needless to say I wasn't there and don't know how his demeanor was, but there's a chance the guy just isn't too sophisticated. Have met a few people who were not ill-willed or deliberately being arrogant - they just put things and people in boxes without much thought behind.

Having said that, I would probably not be able to keep my composure as well as you did. Glad things turned out even better than you could have imagined. Double win

Now, when you land his firm, be sure and thank him with a handwritten note and pic of your new watch.

Nice sales job David....unfortunately the guy is still an ass and he has no clue though I'm sure he has been told so a few times. Hope his money is green

Heh heh, yeah I noticed Archie mentioning this story as well on his channel. I saw the topic and knew this is exactly where it came from. No worries though, he didn't take credit at all for the story and did mention he found it.

Man what a d&ck. I tend to think those that know AP are more respectful and knowledgable than most ignorant people that know Rolex. I expect a comment like that every once in a while while wearing my Rolexes but only expect comments on my AP by well informed watch lovers. Oh well there is always someone that's jealous of what u have.
