I was going to ask for a story behind the watch but this was a lot more than I bargained for. What a fantastic way to put it down. That guy must be a hell of a character. I don't even know him, and I like him. Bravo man!

Autobiography of a Double Red
I was born in Geneva in 1972. Soon after being checked out by several guys in white robes, stuffed in an oil filled pump and pressurized to the point of implosion, I was boxed up and shipped to Lugano, Switzerland where I was put on a shelf inside the Bucherer Rolex store in Via Nassa 56, where I was quite bored for about two years. Once in a while someone picked me up, turned me over and put me down again. One day in 1974, this guy comes in and asked for a good diving watch. One of the white robed fellows that worked in the shop picked me up, again and fitted me on the wrist of the stranger. He said I was the best there is. I was so proud! Instead of sitting me down again, this guy actually paid for my bond and I finally walked out of jail and started to breathe some fresh air. I was tired of having a bunch of faces staring down at me all the time, it made me feel naked.

As time went by I realized my owner was some sort of a government agent getting into all kinds of crazy situations with really bad guys. It was scary, and sometimes I thought we would not come out alive. But we always made it out and the bad guys disappeared. Guess they put them on a shelf in Lugano for long periods of time. We traveled the world together, always changing time zones. What a bore! We have so many war stories to tell it would fill a book.

To my dismay I found out my new owner was really crazy and thought I could dive into 190 feet of rather salty water. But I made it without a drop getting inside and faithfully helped him make his decompression calculations by futzing with my bezel and decompression tables. Many years later, diving computers came out to compete with us diving watches. My owner bought one, but he trusted me more than the computer and always compared data between us two, so I did not feel left out.

One night in 1976, while in Washington DC, some robbers came up behind us and clobbered my owner over the head. Rough hands stripped me from his wrist and started running away. He was undeterred though, and would not abandon me to the crooks that took me. He got up, drew his revolver and gave chase. And even if they were a lot younger, he chased them into a corner and got me back. What a relief! The robbers too were sent to Lugano, I guess. I never saw them again.

About a year ago, my old owner bought a Porsche, the second one during our life together, and I really enjoyed showing off on his wrist while driving; just like I did on many of his other sports cars, like the Alfas, the Lancia Montecarlo and the old 911T.

As I understand, my old owner, he’s very old indeed; bought one of my new distant young cousins, with gold in it, can you believe that? No diving with that watch, but then, I don’t think he’ll be diving much anymore, so it’s ok. Of course I wish the two of them the best of luck, but I think I got the better deal, because my new owner seems to be a real nice young man that really appreciates my looks and my value and will treat me with the reverence and respect I deserve.

My new owner drives a Porsche too, but it is a cool new model. I like that! He’ll show me off like old times and I’ll feel young again.

Absolutely stunning watch and great story mate, surely had a very creative owner:),enjoy in good health!

Beautiful watch! Also an excellent story by the original owner. I'm curious about the perps being sent off to Lugano. Isn't that a beautiful resort? Maybe for the Swiss it's like going to prison.

Thanks guys, after he sent me the detailed history of the watch's life, I asked him what is the craziest situation you have ever been in with the watch?

He said..
The craziest situation is not easy to find because there are a few of them. However, one comes to mind: I was working undercover with some heroin traffickers in Brazil in 1975. I had $650,000 cash in government money inside the trunk of a rented BMW, parked in a lot outside a pub where I was meeting the two bad guys. The money was to be flashed to get a delivery of 12 kilos of pure, and I was negotiating the delivery location. The narcotics squad had placed snipers on the roofs around the bar, just in case some of the bad guys got the idea of pulling a gun and rip me off. Remember no cell phones or beepers then. The dealers were really trying to get me to some location of their choice to consumate the deal and I told them I needed a cigarette to relax and think about their proposal. I walked out of the bar lit a cigarette and when I got to the street corner a car came screeching to a halt. It was my back up team. They told me to get in the car and get the hell out because an informant of the Brazilian police told them the bad guys were setting up a trap to get me killed and get away with the money. Since the bad guys did not know where the car was, and in any event, it was well protected by the snipers, I did as I was told.

Best,

*FYI, he said the places and certain informational details of the story were changed for security.

Man, if there is any chance you could strike up a genuine friendship with this guy you ought to. I've met a few old guys through the years, and sometimes they just love having someone who will listen. If that watch could really talk, there is no telling what it might say.

You got the find of a lifetime between this guy and the watch. Things like that just don't happen too often. Just curious, he must have asked you some questions before he sold you the watch? Sure seems like it going to a good home was important to him.

Bravo again on this story. Love it!

Hey guys, I've decided to sell the DRSD... A Comex which has always been a grail piece for me has become available and unfortunately I cannot keep both. Here are the detailed pictures and info, let me know if you have any questions, thanks!
