I am very surprised by this thread. Page 2 and Jocke hasn't offered any tattoo suggestions yet?

Interesting what a couple people said about the "war" theme, I never thought of it that way, literally. I am proud to say I served my country in the military for 12 years (Naval Officer-Pilot) but do not consider myself a violent person. Like some of you other TRFers, I have seen the effects of war, contrary to movies and poems and popular themes, there is nothing Glorious about it. The quotes to me mean something completely different. For example:

"Then we will fight in the shade" to ME anyway, means that no matter what the odds are, however bad things must look, you NEVER give up your honor, your country, your family. (In those days, surrender meant something different, not only would the Persians not kill the Spartans and Greeks, but the Greeks would all have to join the army of the Persians and literally fight AGAINST their country). So, to die is better then sacrifice your honor, family etc.

"E Tan..." To me does not mean "go kill people" (obviously that's what battle is about) but when the Queen said that to Leonidas she knew he was going to his death. What those words meant to ME, (again, this is only my interpretation) was to "give all for your family and country" If you can not defeat the enemy that is threatening all you know and love, then die trying rather then run away.

Both quotes signify give all for your honor, your family, your country, it is better to die then sacrifice those.

Anyway, that's just how I feel about it, but I appreciate everyone's input.

And STOP reminding me I never made the Tosser List!!!!
Hi Paul, I think you've thoroughly thought out the meaning of your possible tattoo- the idea of honouring your greek heritage especially- (thats why i quoted Monte Carlo's idea of having the tattoo written in ancient greek!- would look really cool!) Also, I like how you interpret your potential quotes- War is not a one dimensional word; It's an incredibly complicated concept with a myriad of meanings- So your interpretation would make that tattoo really meaningful to you!

'Honest opinions'....OK.....

I would be reflecting on the fact that you have to ask advice on such a huge and important decision such as this across an Internet forum.

A tattoo (and I have two) is an immensely personal thing.

Mine were to mark the birth of my son....and it says "Passion for Life" in Hindi, and the other is to mark the tragic loss of my Mother....her name in Hindi also. They are on the upper part of each arm.

I never had a moments doubt and as a result have never regretted them. They have a deep significance to me and were well done.

From your posts you're references to "war and Greece" don't feel hugely connected to me. I may be wrong...and it's likely I am ...after all this is an Internet forum and I don't know you from Adam. But, lets face it, nor do many on here. I really don't believe they can properly offer you anything useful on what to actually have.

A tattoo is essentially a life long commitment.

Think hard about it.

It reminds me of the great advice I was given when we were looking to name our son.

"Don't discuss it or ask others opinions. Go with what you choose. Then once named everyone will agree it was a perfect choice".

Bearing in mind 'others' meant close friends in this context, you asking for such advice on TRF is even more inadvisable.

Then I'm sure as with the child naming advice, everyone on here who cares will celebrate with you.

Further, Promising yourself a tattoo when you reach 50 really doesn't bode well as a reason.

Anyway....it's your choice man. Take it or leave it....

Well said, Dalip. Like many things in life, if your personal choice has such significant meaning, you won't ask or care what others may think.

If it takes this much thought I wouldn't do it. Once it's on it will be more expensive and painful to take it off. It doesn't hurt to get a tattoo but regretting getting it sucks. My 2 pennies only!

Have to agree just cannot see the point of posting on a forum for advice on something as personal as a Tattoo, its up to the person and that person alone what he has done. And if that person cannot make up his mind what he wants tattooed himself, then perhaps he should not have a tattoo. As when its done its for life, and after even if very small quite expensive to remove. And myself have two full sleeves plus a full large back piece, and anyone who says its not painful to have a tattoo is a liar, it hurts but its bearable.

If you are desperate, you can try the ones you pay by the hour.
