Cool to see another HAM on here; I haven't been active in a long time, but I keep my license renewed.

A short story. I wear my watches to work and when I was working offshore west Africa I used to catch flack with comments about how I must be rich wearing a Rolex to work. So I would counter "well just how much does that gold chain you wear cost!" And guess what the chains were at least double what I paid for my Rolex at the time. And now that particular watch is a classic worth 10 times what their gold chains are worth, even with the price of gold where it is today. The short of it is wear your watch and to hell with what other people think!

I never care of someone thinking about my hobbies, or even if they thought that mine is fake, i wear it not to show it off, but rather to promote "self award" and to celebrate life achievements....simply just that...

After thinking about it for a while, I think it may come down to following the crowd (seems like no one cares about a quality watch) and maybe just bad taste. Also think for other people its the mental block of taking the plunge. Have a neighbor who always asks me about my watch (sub) and comments about how he "needs" a nice quality time piece preferably vintage. But it's been a few years now so I don't follow this up anymore. I think people are funny about spending money and what they spend it on. 250k for a second wedding? $200/month cable bills? Guys who drink a case of beer a week? Cigarettes? To me that seems like a big fat waste. Think about no cigarettes for 2 years and you've got the cash for a vintage speedmaster let's say. But it's priorities and judgment that comes because most people are self absorbed a-holes. I never wag my finger at people burning their money or spending on lavish weddings but I think I sleep better knowing that the sub could always be sold or traded or better yet passed down to kids. Most other conspicuous consumption can't. |

I really dont have to deal with it to much. I live in Naples and down here they are quite common, If you were looking you could easily spot 20 plus a day. However I have one friend who is more successful than I am, and he is always blown away by what I am willing to spend on a watch. However the last time we went out, we went to capital grille ($400) Burn Cigar bar for scotch and cigars ($300) and another $60 for cab home. Now I had a great time and we talked some business, but in my opinion this is 100 times more frivolous than buying a high end watch that I personally look at as a not half bad investment.

I'd tell them that Rolex watches are almost free. You can wear them for years and sell them to make back nearly all of your money because they hold their value so well.
