Well, since the OP asked for people's views, I will say that it's not really my bag, but I can appreciate the piece for what it is. It's too refined, complicated and elegant (and expensive!) for my basic, sporty, vintage and rugged tastes!

I don't really like the way the 5,6 & 7 are cut off. Oh yeah and wayyyyyyy too expensive for me.

Love it, absolutely the finest new Rolex in years! Looks great too, that dial is intoxicating and it's function is remarkable.

I tried the RG on today with no intention of buying. After initially thinking the SkyDweller was horrible looking I now feel, after seeing in person, that is is not horrible. It's just not my cup of tea. It is much bigger in person than I thought it would be, but I can't wrap my brain around the date ring complication. It just looks off to me

Ironically I stopped in at the Rolex Boutique here in Chicago and asked to look at the Sky Dweller. It just seems a confused piece of design. And when you think about what Patek etc. offer it's very easy to walk away.

"Complication," indeed. It's a really confusing piece. The rose gold and dial colors seem to go nicely together, then the look is spoiled with the black 24-hr dial and gaudy white/red pointer. Couldn't they have chosen a more subtle color for the month indicator? There's hardly room for that cyclops and date window- the whole dial just seems cramped for space... like the whiz wheel on a Navitimer.
It's like the Bangle years for BMW- some are so loyal to the brand that they will buy anything the company puts out. Time will tell if that direction is worth following. |

When Rolex first unveiled the SD I thought it looked like a funky datejust but the more and more I look at it I am beginning to "get it" so to speak.

I think it's the ugliest watch Rolex has ever made. Even uglier than the YM2.

Nice watch but if I was to spend that kind of money, I'd go for a Yachtmaster II....

People Agree = NO: not IMHO. Bling + cluttered dial. large case = discomfort. price = large downside. The SkyDweller and DSSD are a direction that ROLEX is taking which I am concerned with. Think about it....what is next? Bigger, thicker, less comfortable yet more Breitling-like on the wrist...? (IE: huge bling...) What drew me to Rolex as a young 20'y something was it's pure design, flair, reliability and comfort. Perhaps I am reading into the past and not the future needs of marketing however Rolex was always about a pure and conscious design factor which appealed to the horologist who respected the timepiece on the wrist -- not one who wished it was larger or thicker. The person who knew the history and integrity of the brand. Sorry for the blather... |

There are probably a lot of Rolex watches I would buy before the Skydweller however if money wasn't an issue I am sure it would make it into my collection. It is not a piece I aspire towards but I can definitely see the appeal. The Skydweller is not as delicate as some of the other annual calenders I have seen on the market. I think the Patek comparison is unfair because it addresses dollars and cents rather than taste in the watch's look. It is like saying why buy a Rolex when you can buy a car. I would buy the Skydweller because I liked what Rolex did with their calender rather than just getting any one, even if Patek is a technically superior brand.
