I flew as a loadmaster on the C-141 Starlifter for 20 years. It was a great airplane with great performance and range. I was sorry to see her retired in 2006. Now most are chopped up. Enjoy a few of my favorite pics. The last photo is mine,, the others were from an aircraft website.

Flying low level, 300 feet at 300 knots. Its a kick in the pants ride.

We would pop up to 1100 feet for personnel drops

Heavy equipment drops was same thing, 1100ft at 140 knots or so.

The special operations crews had jets outfitted with FLIR cameras, special radar and flare dispensers.

Off into the sunrise, this is on the way to Antarctica for resupply mission

This is me in Masira Oman during the Gulf conflict

Last link is a youtube video of a personnel airdrop over the drop zone at Ft Lewis and McChord AFB. I flew out of there for 7 years and made many a drop on this DZ.

Nice! I didn't realize the 141 is about as wide as a herkybird. I'm sure you've got some fun stories.

Apeogre, Yes, the C-141 cargo compartment height was the same as a C-130 and the width was just a few inches wider. However, the length was much longer with the C-130 at about 40 feet and the C-141 at 93 feet. As for stories, yes there are many, some were scary and life flashing before your eyes type stuff, and many were funny and involved excess in one form or another. It was a fantastic experience. Now, I'm a retired military guy, working a new job, but always ready to start a conversation with the phrase "I remember one time....." :)

Cheers, Tim in Hawaii

Thanks for sharing Marc. I had to bookmark this thread to enjoy it fully. It's almost sad to see some of these noble warriors in such a state of disrepair.

I flew single engine fighters in the Air Force, but this plane has four engines. It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether.

CFII/MEI here who is not current. 1/2 owner of a Piper Arrow. Had to give up my portion of a BE55-E due to gas prices that wouldn't quit.

Fuel prices have about killed me too. Out in NM it's a cross-country flight to get anywhere, literally. Lunch in the "next town over" is a 350 mile flight!

I hear you. If I try to go to lunch next town over around here, since we're in the ADIZ, I can't just suddenly decide to go to the next town. Must file, and get clearance, and be under ATC control and do the same on the way back in. Kinda took the spontaneous freedom feeling out of flying completely for me. Not to mention that if I sign a student off for solo X country and they make a wrong turn they may get shot down, or at least get themselves scared to the point of starting the accident chain. Ah well. Must get current. Must go flying. But first, must finish 10 more written modules in the next few days so I don't lose my CFI :-)

I fly with the USAF as an ATC consultant from time to time. You know you're with professionals when you're looking UP at the ground. Flying with the c130 boys in the Rockies, doesn't get much better than that.

Avgas 100 LL is now @ € 2.98 a liter or $ 14.98 a gallon in Europe . . . .

So you can guess how many GA aircraft like Cessna, Piper, etc are 'grounded' due to the fuel price . . .

And now the BCAA (Belgian CAA) is working on the SID of the SE Cessna's . . . will be between 150 and 200 hours of inspection they think . . .

Looks good the GA future . . . :-(

Ah, the old days... Not a great shot, but this is from the one time I got to fly the Concorde - at Oshkosh. We couldn't go supersonic, but we got a flyby of the tower, with everyone on the ground with their fingers affixed firmly in their ears.

I'm so sorry. I would have missed it too if not for the cheap Oshkosh flight. Could never afford it otherwise. A beautiful piece of engineering and history.

Yeah, I really was. It was not a "real" Concorde flight but we took off from Oshkosh and zipped around at about .94 for a bit under an hour, did a flyby (man, that thing just screams out of ground effect), went around and landed. It was indeed a highlight, and I'm so happy I had the opportunity. They brought each of us to the cockpit for a sec. The Captain signed my logbook, and I asked him to write "I hereby grant a type rating to..." but he chuckled and just signed it :-). They did ply us with champagne and gave me the bottle since it was Piper and that's what I fly.
