My boss knows I'm a watch guy and that I had been on the hunt, saving for months, using it as one if the many things that motivates me. Being in sales, he loves that I want to buy nice, expensive things bc it means I will do everything I can to crush the number, in turn making him look good and the business healthy :)

I don't think it matters. You work for a person/company and they pay you. You spend the money you earn on what you want, not what your boss/company wants. Are you not allowed to drive a better car than your boss too? He/she may not be as into watches as you. I, myself, am planning on buying an Omega Speedy Pro. I can assure you that, cost wize, it might be the most expensive watch in my office but it's something I am choosing to spend my money on. Wear it with confidence. It's your money.

I had to come back and edit this... by no means am I trying to brag about the watch I want to purchase. It just shows the tastes and preferences of the people here .. and also, this is not an exaggeration, everyone in my age group, 25-30, drives some sort of Audi. I drive my GFs 99 Hyndai - I think it's dumb to drive an expensive car to and from work everyday putting all sorts of wear and tear on it. Those same Audi and BMW drives wear cheaper fashion watches. Watches are my think and I'd buy a Rolex over leasing an Audi/BMW/Benz etc. any day of the week.

Wear it proudly. You could utilize a long sleeve dress shirt with the sleeves down to cover as needed.

As long as your not flaunting it and shoving it in his face.. its absolutely none of his business how you spend your own money on a wristwatch.
Whenever its perceived (<keyword = perception) that you challenge/demean/question/upstage/'one-up'/flaunt or brag to your 'boss' you risk putting yourself in a position with someone who may dictate your employment (or future) at a company. Are you a risk taker? If so, jump in!

Perceptions are a funny thing. Your boss may consider you 'flaunting' your watch by simply wearing it. Is that 'his' problem? Yep. Can he make it your problem? Absolutely.

My boss wears a Sub Date that was given to him by our CEO as a bonus. He knows I'm into watches and couldn't care less about what I'm wearing, but always notices if I'm wearing something new.

We've been working together for almost 5 years, so my guess is he doesn't cares.

Only thing I've not done watch-wise because of my senior partner "boss" is get a bluesy--he has a 14k one and it didn't seem comfortable to me to get a TT. Largely he doesn't care, and maybe one person in my office knew what my AP was. I also think it depends on how you wear it. Flaunting it is bad no matter what "it" is.

I am my own boss so its cool now LOL. I never cared before I started my own company ......I would like if my empolyees wore fine timepieces around the office because that shows they work hard for the finer things in life IMHO.... If any of my salesman hit a million dollars in sales then they get 8k towards a rolex.

my boss is a very jealous man, so NO I can never wear my good watches. As a beater I wear an Omega seamaster or an Ebel Sportwave chrono, because they don't catch his eye.

I don't think I would ever want to work for someone like that. If my boss thinks I am challenging/demeaning/questioning/upstaging/'one-up'ing/flaunting him and decides to dictate my employment future based on what kind of money I spend on what I wear/drive/where I live/how I spend my money.. sorry.. I'll be out looking for another job by my choice. I worked very hard to earn my Rolex. I never, ever flaunt it.. I never speak about it.. show it off.. ever. Thankfully I've never come across this situation.

I guess I could understand where a boss might see things that way, but I would never work for someone like that. Clearly as he's my boss he makes more money than me. He spends money how he wants, I spend it how I want.

Of course it's ok. He is only your boss at work. Your the true boss, do what you want.

But all kidding aside. Your successful and that's how you show it. If anything, your boss should be proud of you because you are successful. Unless you are a horrible employee and just in debt.

This! I also firmly believe that no one notices anyway unless they are a wis as well. If that is the case then they probably have something nice as well.

Depends on your boss, but I always wear nicer watches than them.

It is not ok to flaunt however.

it shouldn't matter to an open minded boss (he/she knows what you make), i'd be more concerned around clients.

A lot of it comes down to what YOUR attitude is towards wearing nicer watches than he. It sounds like you're being humble about it, and not flaunting it in his face saying, "R-O-L-E-X, like it?"...so I say wear it!

Agreed!

Although...One instance where it gets sticky is when the company you work for is great, but you have a supervisor who isn't. I have a friend who is in this situation...thankfully, the turnover in that supervisory position is high.

This can be tricky. The problem is sometimes it can matter. Whether it should or not is kind of irrelevant - he's the boss. If he feels an expensive watch is a total waste of money he may conclude the employee exhibits poor judgement and this could affect chances for advancement or salary increases. I've seen it happen.

And while I agree one probably wouldn't want to work for someone like that, most likely you will never know your boss has this attitude and came to this conclusion about you because of your watch.

It really depends on his personality. I work in finance and I had some bad experiences with wearing expensive watches (Deepsea, Daytona, AP Offshore). I think in my case it was the fact that I kept changing my watches on a weekly basis (because I love to wear all my watches) and that was very noticeable. But then again your boss might be very different. I just wouldn't push it.

This is why I stick to SS watches for work. The precious metals can come out nights/weekends. You can never be too careful

I wear a Rolex.
My boss wears an Omega
His boss wears an Oris.

The higher up the chain, the less expensive the watch in my office!

They have no need to draw attention to their status by flaunting a piece of jewellery.

Depends entirely on the boss, his/her ego, the job, the environment, the . . .

Too many factors to gauge objectively

Only you can truly measure the dynamics.
