To each their own.

What's important to me is the personal enjoyment I get from wearing a particular watch. For example I enjoy knowing I have a well constructed, nicely finished movement in my watch. For a similar reason I would enjoy knowing my watch is made from a precious metal such as platinum or white gold. The fact that others may have no idea what what I'm wearing, and what material it's made of, is irrelevant. I don't wear watches for others to enjoy, but rather for my own enjoyment.

I agree. Besides the Plat DayDate with ice blue dial, I wouldn't pay extra. I remember looking at a Daytonna and being shocked by the price. Find out it was the white gold model I had not seen before. Looked just like the SS model.

I prefer the silver look IMO than gold or rose gold look.

I also buy for my enjoyment not others opinions. I buy white gold & platinum jewellery, and when I can afford it, I would love a platinum/white gold rolex.

I know what it is and that's all that matters. I do like it a little bit when others think its plain silver.

Each to their own as all the different models/materials but for me if I could then I'd go for the plat/wg model.

It's your wallet, your call. Thankfully there are many options, and many fans of them. Some people like the stealth factor of WG and plat, and I absolutely get that.

I completely understand where the OP is coming from.

However, when comparing my SS Sub with a work colleagues WG blue Sub I certainly find his WG watch shinier.
Definately a difference.

LISTEN TO ME...

PLEASE go to an AD and try a WG or PLT watch on for yourself, the weight is the first thing you will feel as a difference to SS.. Secondly gold be it yellow rose or white, has a certain luster to it and "feel".. Its a much brighter, reflective alloy than SS..

PLEASE go and try a WG watch at your AD. Then, you may understand the difference. I could never justify it, but since I tried one, boy they are the holy grails for me!!

Platinum is so bright, the WG numerals & hands on my PL DD always look bronze in comparison to the rest of the watch

The OP is clearly buying watches for their public perception.

Nothing wrong with that.

A platinum piece or WG reference is for the owner's personal satisfaction.

To each their own. But I do understand his point about spending a lot more money for a minimal difference.

I just left the AD where I purchased my YG DD2 to pick up my appraisal and they had a platinum DD2 for me to try on.

Distance: it depends what range you are at and also the lighting. If in the same room, they are noticeably different than SS. Also, if you get the Blue dial, then anyone who knows watches will know the difference.

Feel: I thought my YG was heavy, but the Platinum is about 30-40% heavier and feels great on your wrist because it has a presence.

Ultimately it's going to come down to how deep your pockets are. When I was looking for a Rolex I decided to not go for WG or Platinum because I wanted it to be noticed from yards away, to say I didnt get it for people to notice is a lie. I'm 24 and I wanted to somewhat separate myself. I had the same dilemma you are having, best of luck. Either way, its a Rolex and you win!

But I'm talking about the LOOK not the feel, sure it will feel different, it's different metal. We are visual beings the color of YG will have a different appeal than the color of silver (platinum or WGold)

If you covered up the dial, I wouldn't put money on guessing what metal it was on just one try

Thanks Dino, .... feel a bit of a fraud as the DJ, Sub, RB & DD are mine, the others belong to my Son, but yes you're right pal the DD is considerably brighter, glad that it's apparent & not just my eyes

Visually the main different is luster.. WG shines/reflects light much more than SS...

WG can also show hints of yellow in certain lighting conditions..

No problems, Chris mate! You should get that DJ out to play a little more often, its a little beauty..

You Son has excellent taste in watches, I wouldn't expect anything less with dad like you..

The colour is hugely different to SS, I'm glad its not just me too!..

Platinum and white gold are for those that appreciate the feel of the much as they enjoy the appearance of watch. A platinum day-date will totally feel different than any steel rolex watch. At some point some watch fans enjoy that feeling very much.

Some people only drink wine and some people also really appreciate the aroma of wine. Appreciation of watches for many is many factors and not just appearance.

There is a difference, but I'm not sure if it has a lot to do with the PCL's or that by looking at the dial gives it away, none the less the difference IMHO isn't really significant.....nice collection btw

Imagine owning a Grand Seiko......talk about flying under the radar...

For me, it's not about how it may appear to others; it is how I perceive it.
My reaction to my watch is the only thing that counts.

It's a subtle difference visually. But I do prefer WG over platinum. From what I remember platinum seemed to have a duller appearance than WG, but the weight difference is amazing.

To me, the SS looks more steely and the Platinum more platty and the WG more grayly.
But that's just me...

On the point about WG/Pt, I am perfectly happy with my SS models.

^That's what connoisseurship can do for someone. Discrimination and appreciation are refined skills, not crude ones.

For that matter, the general public can't tell a Sub from an Invicta...the deficit is in the untrained eye of the beholder.
