I'm also a big fan of pocket squares and braces. A nice pocket square can make the difference in the look for the day. It really stands out since many people don't wear them. I love the smell of pipe tobacco and have a pipe but have not become a regular smoker.

Old footage of ball games, movies and plays has everyone dressed up.

With today's casual attire, hats seem out of place. I've worn cowboy hats at concerts and a fedora once to Disneyland (don't ask, I ended up in an impromptu recreation of Indiana Jones with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum). Mostly, though, it feels out of place with my casual clothes.
I agree with these comments and those of Ed. Today's world is a much more casual place. I'm casual myself a lot of the time when not at work. Even when casual I always try to appear very well groomed. The problem with our casual culture is many men no longer know the difference and always dress that way no matter what the situation - church, nice restaurants, etc. Many men don't know how to dress well if the situation were to call for it and like Ed said they don't even own a nice suit for that occasion. I'm probably too young to lament these things but I do anyway.

Amen! For a couple of bucks it just snazzes things up a big notch!

Spot on about how times have changed too - I'm 36, but sometimes I do wish that the suit days were back!

I guess I'm a fitted 'ballcap' wearer from time to time.

Actually, he's quite into his hats - lately he's been turning up in one of those flat hats he uses for driving (I'm not sure what the style's called).

Do you mean a golf cap? I often see older gentlemen (such as my grandfather) wearing them.

I must be lucky because my work pays for me to wear a hat all day.....big black thing with a crest on the front.
Also got a collection of warm/dry hats to walk the dog.

Ah yes! So that's what it's called!

The funny thing is that he hates golf.

My Boston Red Sox cap (logo ca. 1939) and a cashmere beanie when it gets cold. For the guys who wish for suit days to come back: Do not forget, while you seem to have nice outfits, 90% of your co-workers will come in ill-fitted outfits that will rival only used car dealers' outfits. I'd rather see them in baggy jeans than in baggy suit pants :)

As for me, Converse, jeans and a nice cashmere sweater is as good as it gets :) Comfort first!

It's a bit of a chicken-and-egg issue IMHO. Had suits been de rigeur in our time, would this 90% have been so ill-fitted?
