One thing I'd like to mention, being rather a newbie, is that the search function is often a bit difficult if the n00b in question doesn't have enough knowledge to figure out what term to search. I've had some trouble finding things in search, but I do look there before I ask here (or google it...).

The prevailing attitude also seems to lose a lot of people right off the bat.

I, for one, thought your post was very inappropriate, snide (the "I guess it's hard no to get jaded if you have thousands of posts under your belt about a single watch manufacturer" comment"), and really quite valueless. This is primarily a Rolex forum, so the fact that you are commenting in a negative manner about folks talking primarily about a single watch manufacturer (Rolex) is certainly odd.

If you don't find TRF to your liking, no one is forcing you to stick around and "need a bit of a thick skin and rise above it and take it for what it is" notwithstanding "the odd bit of useful info here and occasional amusing anecdote" you may stumble across here.

The majority of us enjoy TRF, the camaraderie, the sharing of information, and the friendships to be made. Yes, tempers do flare, and and yes, sometimes tact is lacking, but as has been said above, welcome to the internet.....where folks just like YOU, can anonymously post inflammatory comments........just for the fun of it!

Curious, however, as to why the "prevailing attitude also seems to lose a lot of people right off the bat" didn't see you go elsewhere long ago?

And, to the OP.......at times, there are more of those responses, than at other times, and sometimes, there is no malice intended, but as we all know, the internet doesn't do well with innuendo and hyperbole.....and often feelings are hurt unintentionally, as well as (unfortunately) intentionally. Stick around, though.....I do think you will find the positives far outweigh the negatives, here on TRF.

I only hate crybabys and drama queens.

Sometimes we answer the same question over and over again and there is new members that think it's easier
if someone else search on the forum for the answer to them. But any haters I didn't have seen over her, but
here is one or two smartass. No name is mention.

Welcome to the club.

There are always people who like to stir the pot. Sometimes you have to get to know them to know they are joking and yes sometimes there are just trolls. Our mods are pretty well balanced and open minded. if a post really bothers you, feel free to flag it with the little red exclamation icon. Sometimes mods don't see all the posts here as there many!

I welcome you to look around at all the other watch forums out there. I have seen most and I can pretty much guarantee you this is one (if not the most) friendly places out. Especially considering its size!

If you think this forum is rude, hit the car forums and recalibrate.
We also don't sensor negative comments, unlike a few other watch forums in bed with the manufacturers.
I appreciate the independence and camaraderie.
Stay or go, that's up to y'all to work out.

For the record, I personally haven't been subjected to any issues directly, but this morning while going through the threads, I got fired up after reading responses to two posts from new members (accounts created in the past couple of months). One response really set me off. I'm not going to call out the posts or the responders because I believe that's a violation of the forum rules (and I'm ok with that).

I frequently browse these groups, as well as several other software and web developer groups, and have yet to encounter these kinds of responses to newbie types of questions. Usually it's a short explanation that this is a newbie question and here is [a link to] the answer (rather than RTFM <- if anyone reading this knows what that means).

http://forum.jquery.com/
http://www.railsforum.com/
http://clojure.org/
http://www.coderanch.com/forums
+ several firearm enthusiast forums which I won't list because I believe it's a violation of this forums posting policies.

Most of these are 'expert forums', which I really kind of viewed this one as, but I'm seeing it as social forum instead. It was a mistake for me to think otherwise.

You are absolutely right and it was wrong for me to post that. But I meant that as some responses to newbie posts, make me believe that some forum people reply like they hate new people asking questions.

I agree, but not every one has been on the internet for 20 years, (15 for me). As well, not everyone is use to news groups. And some people are plain just excited that they are part of the new rolex club. Why not welcome them?

To be fair, those aren't the posts I'm talking about. Those should be moderated out, and they must be because I rarely see them. And I'm usually creeping on here at least every other day.

I probably deserve that, but in my opinion some of the newbie's don't deserve some of the responses they receive either.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to feel that way, and one of the sites I develop on is a search engine!

On other non-watch forums, the first response usually starts with "hey welcome to the forum [enter forum subject here] is awesome isn't it?" If the question has been asked repeatedly and is not a sticky people usually provide links to the answers and mention the search.

Guess I'm venting a little, and there are "those people" on every forum, but just noticed people come across more rude here than on other forums I've belonged to. Thanks for reading my vent.

Wow I'm really surprised you've found this. TRF is the most tolerant forum I've ever come across. If you want intolerance go ahead and post a question about oil or tires on a motorcycle or automotive forum.

No, TRF members routinely and conscientiously answer new posts asking the same questions they answered last week from a different new member. The only thing you'll find to the contrary is some good natured thread hijacking by members who've become real life friends.

Yep, I'm a member on a few car/truck forums that will rip you a new one for 5 pages for asking a noob question without searching first. This place is extremely nice compared to most.

+1 As for the car forums, just ask what kind of oil to use or what type of tire is best, and just sit back.

Developer forums explains it, although I have seen some bad behavior in some I frequent. For my money I find this forum really positive especially when someone gets a new piece of any kind.

I joined here because I thought this forum was quite civil. I'm not a fan of places where people viscously bicker. Arguing is fine, but it doesn't get out of hand here.

I too am on several car forums. And the reason I have a high post count at only one is because that one is pretty tame too. But this is where I spend most of my time now.

TRF has the kindest, most generous, knowledgeable and helpful internet community I have yet to come across. Sure there is a little drama now and then but I have been and continue to be deeply moved and inspired by the great people on TRF. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Hey guys - sorry for going off topic, but does anyone here sleep with their Rolexes? What about shower with it? When you go to the gym? Lastly, a sales rep told me a price increase is coming, is that true?
