You're right Grady -- I shake my head at myself for considering these pretty different watches! Of course, what I really want is a Patek 5296R-010. But that's another story:

http://www.patek.com/contents/default/en/5296R_010.html

To give you all a bit more information about my decision:

I already own a 16600 Sub and 16610 Dweller ... so the 14060M is utterly superfluous. I just like its clean dial and lighter weight. I respect the Sea Dweller but find it a little chunky for everyday wear. The 16610 without cyclops (had a Daytona bezel installed) is pretty much the perfect watch. But the no-date is marginally smaller and that much simpler. Doesn't make much sense to add another Sub, I know, but this is the Rolex forum so I'm not alone with this obsession, right?

The 39mm Explorer probably looks the best on me -- perfect size. I tried it on along with a 114060 and everyone in the store said, "The new Sub is great but get the Explorer -- it looks better on your wrist".

The Speedmaster is appealing (to me) because of the domed Hesalite (acrylic) crystal, symmetrical dial, hand winding, and iconic Moon status. I could care less about the chrono function, to be honest, but the watch is so different from what I own and retro that I find it appealing.

Leaning toward the Speedmaster at the moment. Would pick the Sub if I didn't own two ;-) Would pick the Explorer 1 if the minute hand were a little longer and the 3, 6, and 9 had Superluminova like on the 36mm version.

Maybe I know the answer to my own question. It's just fun to consider options. If anyone wants to trade straight up for the Patek that would be great too ;-)

Rolex Explorer 1 214270 (new) >>> grand new, get this one!
Rolex 14060M (mint pre-owned) >>> Iconic, but preowned!!!
Omega Speedmaster 3570.50 (new) >>> give it up!

All are great watches. Since you already have the SD, I'd go with the Speedmaster. It's a beautiful watch and I personally enjoy winding it every morning.

speedmaster...for the reasons you cite. You already own a sd/rolex. Diversify! Why not get the most unique and cool looking watch of the bunch??? Like you, I love the domed hesalite crystal, symmetry, and retro vibe of the iconic speedmaster.

I have both explorer I 39mm & Speedy pro. In terms for versatility I'd go Explorer I. For historical significance, I'd go Speedmaster Pro.

Speedy Pro, I had always wanted a Explorer I 39mm until I tried one on. It is a little plain for my taste. I have a Speedy Pro and love it, albeit it doesn't see alot of wrist time. Your thread made me walk over to the safe and pull it out. All wound up ready for desk duty tomorrow.

Shocked at the overwhelming response for the speedy.

But I agree. Not just in theory either, as I plan on picking one up soon

I also love the fact that I rarely see then in the wild, whereas I feel like rolex is as common as squirrels these days. They are everywhere.

I am also quite suprised being that it was posted in the Rolex section. You are right about never seeing them, although in Manhattan I was suprised at the amount I do see. It is a watch show walking around the streets daily here but as far as the Speedy I have seen quite a few since moving here. Check out the 3573 (sapphire crystal with clear back), you will fall in love!

Count out the Sub if you've an SD and the chrono is too busy on the Speedy IMHO. Explorer for me but I'd hunt around for preowned EXPII (42mm) the strap, lume and 2nd zone are all better than EXP39.....

On pics alone, the Exp I looks perfect on you.
I love the Speedy too but Exp gets the edge for me.

This particular Omega model does not match my taste and I would avoid it even if I was comparing it to Casio G models. I would go with the Sub and it looks really good on your wrist however it is not new and I personally prefer to buy my watches new. The explorer looks good on you as well and If I was in your position I would choose it.

If you can only have one I'd go with either the explorer or the sub with the explorer being my 1st choice.

14060 & Speedmaster are icons and classic and both should be there in a collection imho.
however if i have to pick one then 14060, but i ll keep thinking of that lemania movement ;)

Thanks for all the input everyone. By the way, the photos I posted initially are not of the three watches on my wrist -- just pulled from the Internet for reference.

The "short hand" on the 39mm 214270 is not an issue, only in pictures.
I wear it every day and have never once thought anything of it.
In fact, were it not all over this forum, I would have never even thought
about it. It's a very strange thing, kind of like a person who looks bad
in pictures. I love the watch, and I also love the 3570.50.

I lust after that watch, too, but in WG.

If that's the look you're going for, then I think that the 114270 is a good choice, because it looks as dressy as a DJ, but without the cyclops, and the hands and dial give it a sporty look, too.

If you aren't interested in chronograph functions, then I'd put the Speedy on the back burner.

I agree. In some ways macro-photography has not been kind to the watch industry.

Wow, three great choices, also three that are on my to get list... but my pick would be what I picked to get first... then over time to aquire the other two. Not sure what you're looking at as far as the Speedie but I love the saphire back model. My plan is Sub (one down!) Speedie then ExplorerI. Good luck!
