With ADs Ive found its hit and miss with their watch knowledge but at the Rolex Boutiques they know their stuff.

My AD knew all about it and the owner actually brought out a catalog from Basel to show me some pics.
We have only one Rolex AD in this area but they are great and take good care of me ! |

Guess what I would expect in a high end jewelry store is to have staff assigned to the department they know about, i.e. watches, diamonds, gold, etc. I would want to hire people who are as excited about the product as I would be. Not an easy thing to do I suppose.

Most sales staff are not trained to deal with customers who are well versed in whatever the sales staff are selling.
It's also a bit unreasonable to expect such, not that it isn't nice to run into sales people who really know their stuff. I spend a lot of time on the internet researching whatever I want buy that will cost a sum significant enough that a poor decision would represent a clear and costly blunder. The only thing that I expect from sales staff is honesty. A simple, "I don't know," or "I'll be glad to find out for you," is far better than just lying through their teeth. But on the whole, it's just better to do your own research, since so much information is readily available, and just let the sales staff handle the transaction. I'm lucky that at my AD the watchmaker is very skilled and knowledgeable about his craft and his product and while I do spend a lot of time here and elsewhere trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible, he very often informs me of things I don't know or understand and things it might take a good bit of effort or just plain luck to find out.
