Is the warranty from an AD worth the extra cost vs. grey market? How many needed it?

X2. I have purchased through both AD's and many grey market dealers over the last several years. I have had to do warranty work on 2 watches that were grey. One was blank, so I put my name. On the other, it was named. No matter either way, I just sent in the watch w/ the card and the work was completed.

Additionally, if your in either OC or SD, I can recommend highly reputable watchmakers w/ parts accounts that are not only reasonable, but I found through others here on the forum.

If your in LA, you can always just walk it into the RSC too!

A Rolex seldom needs warranty work and you need to decide for yourself if it's worth it to you.. Frequently the savings is more than the cost of a full service and so even if the watch fails and you pay for a Rolex service you may be ahead cost-wise.

Grey dealer watches may not have a warranty card stamped by a Rolex dealer.

The likes of DavidSW and other "powersellers" will have.

DavidSW is not a grey dealer. He just sells Rolex watches with 1 mile on the clock and a full Rolex warranty.

At least that's how I understand it to be.

Take it to any AD or watchmaker. Not a problem.

I buy new simply because it gives me peace of mind in knowing that the watch hasn't been dropped or possibly took on water or so on. Plus it's not that big of a money difference, depends on the outlook of the person I guess ultimately.

I bought a 14060M just under 2 years ago (Random ser # just before discontinued) wear it daily. About 6 weeks ago I noticed it was running about 10 seconds fast a day and the odd day I didn't wear it, it would stop after about 24 hours. Called the dealer and they said drop it off and they'd send it to RSC Toronto (gave me a loaner, not Rolex, while it was gone) 4 weeks later watch comes back. It looks new, nice service case with polishing cloth included. Invoice says minor adjustment made, gaskets and seals replaced, and pressure tested. Also says replacement value $7,550.00. I bought this watch for under $6,000.00 tax included when it was new. Grey market is nice but there's something about dealing with a dealer that just gives me piece of mind....

All of that, sans loaner, would happen if the watch was still under warranty regardless of who sold it, AD or trusted seller - the RSC does excellent work.

For the $thousands saved with a trusted seller here on TRF (or elsewhere), one could own a 2nd Rolex without the need for a lesser loaner...

I bought a 116610 in January and is in the box and handed it to me. Now, I need the money and I plan to sell. The official Rolex warranty serves the next owner without doubt.
The only thing that you ask the grey seller is if the watch has aftermarket parts because in this case RSC not going to receive it.

Cash at the Rolex dealer, BNIB with a 24% discount......plus that warm and fuzzy feeling. I don't believe there was a better deal to be had at the time.

Ditto here too. It worked out to be less than the "grey market dealers", AND no import tax anxiety.

I dealt with dsw on my last purchase. Will likely never buy from an AD again. Taxes considered I saved 22% on my bnib gmtiic. Watch was exactly as if I had purchased from AD (stickers, new papers my name) except I did not have to negotiate with my AD, whom did not come even close to the price. Also did not have to ship my watch out of state. I would liken the transaction to the day I discovered amazon. I see something I like and boom! its at my doorstep in 24hrs at the best possible price.

That indeed is a very good deal. But it is not typical unless A) You have a very good relationship and are already a valued customer or, B) The watch has been sitting around the AD and he wants it gone.

I've a question about taxes in Canada. As we know, you can avoid sales tax in the States on out of state transactions, but because a major component of taxes in Canada is Federal, is there any way of avoiding those? And if you buy something from another province do you avoid the PST? If not, which do you pay, the PST in the sellers province or the tax in your own?

Taxes vary province to province, there's a group of us that frequent the dealer in Halifax for various iteams and their very accommodating. I realize its not for everyone but in my business as well as theirs, the guy you pay the money to is the guy that takes care of you. To some people it's not a big deal, to others it's just one less thing to worry about.......the tax thing is ultimately 2 things are certain in life, death and you guessed it.......taxes. As for old stock mine is random serial #, he still had a BNIB g serial #, I got to pick the newer..

AD for me! I have never had a problem, but a buddy did and it's nice to have a relationship with people that can get things taken care of.

ALSO another guy I know bought his from an AD and wanted to size the bracelet himself... he did not set one of the spring bars in the new oyster clasp right and it FELL OFF HIS WRIST!!!! smashed the crystal... This was a brand new watch!!!!
He took it to the AD, and they sent it to Rolex along with a letter on the anal customers behalf (who was so anal he wanted to size his own watch) and low and behold RWSC took care of the whole thing, Full service, new crystal, NO CHARGE!!!! That was the AD's doing!

Now that is a good AD experience!

I always enjoy extra savings vs an extended warranty no matter if we're talking Rolex watches or other items. I can't help my cheap nature. Haha!
