If you are looking for a dressier watch, it would be a DJ.

If a chronograph appeals to you, then I'd say the Speedy Pro. It's a watch with strong history, is virtually unchanged since it was first introduced, and is quite affordable to boot.

A Sub is a great start to any collection but as others have said, have a good think about what your aims are with your future collection.

For example, some people collect certain brands or will collect just diving watches. Some people like a collection to cover all occasions so they have a watch to wear to the office, when doing sports, diving, evening dress, racing, etc etc.

Also think about whether residual value is important to you as certain brands like Rolex do a lot better than others in the re-sale market.

The Watch Snob makes a good point in a quote from one of his web pages.....

The practical upper limit of a man’s watch collection is based upon what he can afford and store while keeping in his wife’s good graces. Of course, I believe that once you start forgetting some of the pieces you have in your collection, you may have gone too far.

The issue I have with many of the people who have large collections (and I know a few) is that they tend to not be discerning in their watch collecting. So they buy any new watch that catches their fancy, regardless of its significance or any intent to wear it. They end up with a drawer full of Thierry Nataf-era Zeniths, some silly depth gauge divers that have never gotten wet and a handful of fashion watches that were fondled and bought like cheap hookers by a drunken salesman on a forgettable business trip.

While I normally do not condone knuckling under to a spouse, judging by some of the watches you listed, I tend to agree with your wife. It’s better to have five good pieces than 25 questionable ones.

But my choice would be a Rolex GMTIIc..........

Now for my opinion: a GMT or a chrono. Many like the Daytona but I prefer the Speedmaster Pro or a Zenith El Primero. The new Tudor Heritage Chrono blue is sweet, also if you can find one.

I went for the Speedmaster as my choice after purchasing the Sub-C! I couldn't be happier. The hesalite, manual winding movement and the history of the Speedmaster make the pair perfect.
