IMHO...no the rolex sub is not meant for the boardroom. But when paired with a suit, the juxtaposition is flawless. That is the difference between people who understand what makes fashion fun and those who are blindly following the rules. |

In my opinion, a good looking dress should have balanced elements, without shouting ones.
Color splash socks? Gshock? That cuts the balance. A submariner (especially the 5 digits ones) is very, very well balanced. Slim lugs, small numbers on bezel, it is dressy.

Sub looks good with a suit, but I think the Datejust and DD dress up better.

I would expect 'The Most Interesting Man In The World' to be wearing a sub. Just in case something breaks out that needs to handled.

Another vote for YES, it is definitely dressy enough in my opinion. As I mentioned in a different thread I had always planned on buying a Sub and mainly for work - which for me is either my home office or traveling and in meetings with high level execs from the largest companies in the world in many different verticals (broadcasters, banks, telcos, etc). In the end I went with a different Rolex but the main reason being I see many of them almost daily on those very execs wearing very expensive suits. These are guys that could afford any watch without batting an eye, and many of them choose the Sub.

Bond made the Submariner a dressy watch. But remember, he needed it since he came to the party in a wetsuit with a rubber duck on his head...and he actually used the bezel to time explosives. He didn't get OCD over the fact that it wasn't lined up to 12 exactly

Does the Sub work with a suit? Absolutely!
Would I call it a dress watch? Not really. :) |

I think I should make my usual argument here. The "James Bond did it"-argument only applies if you are comperable to James Bond in other ways as well. Or as it was eloquently stated in Forbes (Never mind that they confuse "Rolex" with "Sports Rolex":

The Sub looks great under any circumstances. I routinely wear it with lounge clothes or formalwear. Looks right at home in either scenario...

I wear mine with everything from sweatpants to suits. I've had people make comments about wearing it with sweats saying its too dressy..I could are less. I was wearing it while working in the engine room on my boat this weekend spinning wrenches, got a shower and wore it to dinner that night to a nice restaurant, that's the beauty of the sub.

It is a Rolex. The standard by which all others watches are compared. Rolex is universal in its use in its many forms, from the DD to the humble Air-King. Wear the Sub with any clothes from jeans/t-shirt to Tux. Rolex is the standard of excellence.

Sub is not dressy it's sporty your friend is right. But sporty can be mixed with dressy it's done all the time. So it depends too there are sportier dress ideas that are quintessentially American, so if you lean towards this sportswear influenced idea of mens fashion then your fine. If your idea is more French then a proper dress watch is a must. Personally I much favor the sportswear look. But this is actually a great divide in menswear fashion idea look into it it's interesting to learn the history of it. And to those they think there are no rules anymore your very mistaken!

I'd agree with that statement but sadly, most people just don't know or just don't care. I was in a meeting the other day where the guy leading the meeting was wearing a giant blue plastic watch with his suit. It wasn't just blue, it was bright blue. The meeting was in Spanish and I was having a hard time translating because I was too busy following that watch around everywhere

It's a matter of preference. What's a dress watch nowadays anyway? You see people wear 60mm dinner plates with a chronograph function on their wrists with suits. Or a digital watch that can tell you the current atmospheric pressure and a button that glows in the dark while wearing chuck taylors in a 3 piece suit. I don't think anyone can argue what kind of watch is appropriate in dressy situations anymore. It's all preference now. While I wouldn't mind wearing a sub with an off-white dinner jacket and black slacks from time to time, I would much rather wear something thinner, low profile, cleaner dial (date or time only), in a black or dark brown leather band and between 34-40mm in diameter. I admire the classics so I show it in the way I dress. Some have a less conservative approach, and there's nothing wrong with that.
