personally, i would prefer if all rolexes had nicknames bc the fkng numbers are getting ridiculously hard to remember at my old age.
Rolex Product Planning & Engineering: Still use modified model numbers going back over 50 years Rolex Marketing: Associate names to the watches that were essentially nicknames in the hallways but probably adapted at a later date Rolex Owners: Use nicknames to show their passion and identify with pop culture ironic how we're on a forum where essentially everyone uses a nickname and giving a watch a nickname is cause for debate. |

Yeah, I've never used the numbers; named and abbreviations (DD, AK, etc.) are fine with me.
I do have a nickname for my DJ, however, I call it my watch...

There are really no nicknames for the Explorer II, so I'm just gonna call mine "Bob". In fact, I'm wearing my Bob right now.

I'm not a big fan, myself, but when I began buying and selling back in the '70s, we just used "Sub", "Bubble Back", "Doctor's Watch", "Calatrava", "Perpetual" and the like, when referring to particular watch.....rarely, if ever, using reference numbers, and never, as I recall, making up nicknames. Joining TRF I was most surprised to see folks referring to their watch by the reference number, and in some cases even nicknames....again, something we never did when I was buying and selling in the '70s. But, as has been said, to each his own! It's your money spent, so call them what you like!!

It doesn't really bother me either way. I call my watch my Sub, Submariner, 14060 or just my Rolex.

This watch brand owes its current fame on it's ability to literally go through hell and back over and over again and still function amazingly well, be serviceable and move along to the next decade. I myself have owned a Sub that started out as a brand new prized possession and year after year I inevitably found myself torturing that watch (which BTW I paid $2,600 for and sold 10 years later for $4,400) and after 10 years it was still running at COSC, and looked great! Between years 5 and 10, I just simply stopped worrying about it, as it proved to be seemingly industructable! Actually got to a point where I figured, there's no way it survives me breaking breaking concrete with this sledge, or jack hammering etc...but that's cool, I will send in for service. Only thing is, it kept surviving it and running at COSC. So, I have seen and met tons of people whom have amazing beaters with tons of character. Many with war stories as well! In fact, my biggest regret is having ever sold that specific Sub, as the history it had in my life alone is not replaceable. Should have just bit the bullet and added my current watches rather than funding w/ the sale of my memories. |

This whole argumet is silly. Isn't a "sub" a nickname in itself? Call them what you please... no one bats an eye when a gmt 16710 is called a "pepsi", but the use of a nickname - whatever it may be - for the BLNR has a lot of people losing their minds? First world problems.

Sub is a abbreviation of Submariner, not a nickname.

I think nicknames are okay for informal discussions among WIS types, especially on the board, as long as they are simple and don't sound idiotic.
I'd have to wonder about a guy who uses nicknames around the hoi polloi, because you know, most folks would think you were a nut for talking to your watch or just if you said you were wearing your Pespi today. As far as I can tell, the BLNR is most often referred to as the BLNR. Other names pop up, but it doesn't seem that anything has as yet stuck.

I'm not inclined to use the nicknames, but, in response to the OP's question, a nickname is often a term of endearment.
Certainly these watches are dear to us, as watch enthusiasts (watch nut, or WIS, if you prefer), so what the hell. It's a mark of affection. In polite company, whether an AD or cocktail party, when among non-enthusiasts, I would probably not use a nickname, just as I would probably not call my girlfriend by a pet name in public. The OP's question, then, leads to a perhaps larger question: that we feel such affection for an inanimate object...well maybe that would be of more interest to a psychologist then the nicknames themselves! |

There was a kid, a recording engineer, on the forums some time ago that wanted to refer to his Milgauss as a "Goose" . . .

I don't use them myself but don't mind them, whatever floats your boat!
Although I agree that asking to try a Batman on at an AD may make the salesperson give you a funny look I don't see why we have to have such a strong debate over the use of nicknames, it's all in good fun and as far as I know (except for the Bruiser when it comes to the GMT BLNR) there's no harm or offense intended.

Immature - I don't think so. Unnecessary - perhaps so, given the reference numbers & "real" names given to each model by Rolex.
IMHO, use them or not as you please. There's obviously room in the TRF realm for both - and thank goodness for it!

I don't are one way or the other. To me just easier than running out the five or six numbers for model. Most of the time I have know idea and could not care less about model nos.

Nicknames, as in "President" and "Paul Newman"?
I don't have a nickname for my Yachtmaster, or for my husband's Submariner, but a nickname can, of course, be useful shorthand instead of having to type out "SS/platinum YM" or "TT/black face Sub" every time. "Pepsi" and "root beer" GMTs give me a clear idea of what watch we are talking about. |
