Hard to go wrong with a sub.

I would go for the sub. The dj II is too big for a non-sports watch imho. But I wear a 34mm watch, so I'm used to smaller watches.

It does depend on wrist size though.

I'll make it easy for you. Choose this Explorer and you husband will have the most versatile watch in the Rolex line, and no compromises.

Another sub vote here. The sub is very versatile and can be worn with almost anything. If he gets into wanting more watches, as many of us here do, there are certainly many more options to look at, but the sub will make a very good "first watch" or "only watch" in a collection.

Reach for the Sky's and go w/ a Sub Date! I'm sure one of the trusted sellers in the For Sale section can help you bridge the $ gap and get you into a Brand New in Box as well! In So Cal, I have done multiple transactions w/ Tony: JustRolexes and Brad of OCRolexguy! they are both great, but lots of reputable guys on this site that do tons of deals w/ great reputations!

i do love both of these watches. I love how large the DJII looks, but the revamped sub in a comparison of what i would want to wear on a daily basis takes the cake

If the sub date is what you really want to give him. Keep saving.

No question that the sub is the watch. Seek a sub date maybe even older sea dweller.

Yup, I'd go older Sub Date and save the cash and own a classic piece.

I prefer the Sub but votes Datejust because of the suit wearing.

This is why Rolex made the Explorer I; it splits the difference between the watches you are considering. To be sure, they are both fantastic choices - I have a Sub and the DJII is a great piece. In my opinion, the Exp I is the most versatile watch in the Rolex line - casual, dress, durable, lume, the updated movement, bracelet and clasp, it will fit any situation your husband wants to wear a nice watch. I love mine, no one who has one does not love theirs. Check it out.
