Exactly, true grails are not obtainable (and it's all relative person to person). I've got my obtainable grail list for sure. Once you hit one of those it's onto the next! 5970G for me, now I desperately want a 5004P. It's delicious, and a grail for sure. But not a grail in the fullest sense because in half a decades time I can probably secure one (as was done with the 5970).
But my true grail of grails is blue dial 5970P or the 5131J "View of the City of Geneva" both are 1:1 and I doubt I will ever have enough liquid funds if they went to auction and both of which probably won't see public sale for some time. My other grail that I know 100% I will never get is a 5074P, it's just too much. |

I can't say if I had a grail - but I did want a Submariner and now that I have one, I find myself looking at other brands/Rolex models. So I guess it's inherent in me that I'd never be content.
Bummer, now that I read that I realize I'm shallow and pathetic. Thanks TRF! ;)

For me there's no other watch that I could afford and not feel guilty for buying that can beat it. For the most part this shall be my last watch purchase for many years. Of course there are "what if I won the lottery" watches I have which would be the 1. A.Lange dateograph 2. Patek Philippe 5205g-010 those are my true grails, for those are the unattainable for me at this point of my life.

I don't really have a grail watch and don't like the idea of desiring something truly unobtainable, so I prefer to think of a grail collection, and then each time you get a watch that is part of that collection you can enjoy it while also moving on to the next piece in the search for your holy grail collection.

I think the "grail" concept is fascinating.
I was completely obsessed with the Explorer 1655...keep following them on auction, other forums, finding obscure dealers that might have one... Then I saw one up close and personal - and realized i didn't love as much in real life. Quite relieved i hadn't dropped the $10-15k+ ballpark mandated. Still dreaming about the old Daytonas...but mostly seem to roll my eyes when they seem to sit around $30K...and realize how much I love the ones I own |

I don't really have a grail but when i set my mind and poor wallet for a watch I usually go for it.
To me the fun is the research, journey, and patience to saving up for a new watch...Once I achieve my goal I end up happy for awhile then I need a new challenge (read: new watch) It never ends LOL. /Amer |

For me, it's attainable, but not something that you can just wait a month for and buy. It's something you gotta put hard work into and have to save up a long time for. What about a 5th option? - Obtain the grail, marvel that the day has come and bask in all its glory. Then realize you spent a ridiculous amount of money on it, feel depressed, conflicted, think about returning it, and then come to terms with the purchase. And never buy another one again since the grail is THE ONE. And when you do think about buying another one, all it takes is a quick look at your wrist to realize you spent a crazy amount of money and you're not going to do that again. My grail is evolving- At first it was a two-tone Daytona, then it was a full on gold Daytona, then I thought about a YG GMT, then YG sub, thought about a JLC Deep Sea, and then maybe a Patek Caltrava. I'm think solid gold as the grail. And then I'm done and out. |

For me no such thing as a grail and there is always another one out there. It would be simple if we all had one grail and once it was achieved we were finished hunting!

I don't really agree that a "true grail" has to be defined by price or unobtainability. It's just the watch you can't stop thinking about, covet above all others, and aspire to own. Still in phase #3 here with my 1530, but we'll see how long that lasts!

You're happy for a few months, and then you find another grail. Happened to me 3 times

Good question and my experience...
My grail was my very first Rolex, saved for and purchased cash in '85, a TT Datejust with white Roman numeral face. That watch 'did it' for me each and every time I placed it on my wrist. Well as life throws it's curve-balls finances waned and I sold it after enjoying it for four years as my only wrist watch. In going through a decade of tight finances (thanks X-wife..) I told myself that I would never spend that much on a 'watch' again. Well I worked smart and built a business with some other key guys and the watch bug - as well as disposable cash - returned. Subsequently I bought and sold and traded 20+ mid range watches over a ten year period often having 6-8 lovely watches in rotation, thinking that I wanted 'this' look, or 'that' size, and silently always wanting to experience a solid gold timepiece on bracelet. Well that solid gold watch came along, a LNIB $30K Breitling which I obtained for far, far less. Twas a thing of beauty weighting 272 grams with a sunburst blue dial, one of 35 made in solid gold. Well I wore and it found that it was a little too flashy. No it was waay too flashy. And the weight never let you forget it was there. And my wife felt that it cast the wrong image (for our lifestyle and social circles....no slam to those who wear and love gold watches..) so I traded it and came out making some decent money on the experience. Anyhow - long story short is that I wish that I still owned my first Rolex. The experience of staring at that old fold out Rolex brochure for months as I saved. The feeling of walking into the AD and paying cash. The anxiety as I awaited the sizing of the bracelet that day. The feeling of pride as I placed it on my wrist each morning. The inside snicker as many asked and suggested that it was a knock off since I was in my early 20's. Those feelings were never repeated to the same degree, not even close - when I bought, sold and traded my last five Rolex. I love my EXPII and it is a perfect fit for my lifestyle, comfort, accuracy, all first rate, but I do not consider it a grail, nor do I lust for any other make or model irregardless of a cash windfall. (well maybe....;) So perhaps I am among the minority here - but I suggest to those who have never owned a Rolex, that your first Rolex purchase (at any age, of any model) may be the most savory of all! |

I love watches in general, but I only have one grail at the moment, and it is in my collection already (ALS RG RLH PLM). Nothing out there compares to the aesthetics of my favorite piece, IMO. That said, I still find other pieces that I love and appreciate aesthetically, and I still find new pieces to buy...

As others have stated, I really do not have a grail....at one point I thought that I did, but quickly realized that I still wanted other watches. So no grail for me, just the desire to own specific watches which seems to be perpetually evolving!
