Carl, Congratulations on starting down a new road!
the experiences and friends you made in your job are yours to keep forever and I'm sure they will be in your life as much as you need and want them, but now its a new chapter and there is nothing so exhilarating as a new adventure, all the best down the next road

I feel like sharing this with you tonight, after working for a company for 4 years and 2 months I quit my student job today. I can't say I feel bad for it since the reason why I'm leaving is because I've been offered another job elsewhere, my manager knew I wasn't planning on staying in my store forever and she knew that time was coming so it's not like I was leaving in bad terms with her, I even took the initiative of telling her about my new job a month prior to my last day instead of the usual two weeks since she was always so kind with my and I really enjoyed working with/for her.

I feel like I'm turning quite a page in my life, I've had quite a lot of co-workers in my store and even helped other stores every now and then by working a few days at other places so I've got to know a lot of people. When you've been working with the same people every single weekend and during all your holidays/vacation for that amount of years you sure develop some friendships, some of you may have worked with your co-workers for much longer but as a clerk job in a small store I feel like the ambiance is different, you don't expect people to be with you that long even if they work full time. The only bad thing about leaving is not working with them again or seeing my regular customers, people with whom I've developped a long term professional relationship over the years. Long story short, I worked with animal owners and had to be some kind of a counselor for accessories, food or treats, it may sound stupid but some of those customers came very often and I've seen quite a few dogs growing over the years, some were even brought in when they were adopted at around three months and came by almost every week until they reached adulthood.

All in all, I can't say I'm sad to leave even though there is this bad side. I just have a strange feeling right now as it's the job I've had for the longest time and I'm leaving it for something much more serious. I just thought I'd share it since some of you know what I'm studying and I wanted to give you a little update regarding my professional situation.

Thank you for reading, feel free to comment.
Carl, my friend.... I can only say congratulations and don't sweat it. Change is a good thing. I know that you have a big heart and it shows. I have seen how you help folks around here and you take their problems as your own. I am sure you will miss your friends but remember 4 years ago they were not your friends. Same will happen now. I can only forsee great things for you in the near future and you will be very successful. In a couple of years you can show us your Patek Grand complication collection. Am sure of your success.

As someone who has changed careers (albeit a long time ago now) I think I can relate to what you're going through. I remember the stress. But I also remember the excitement. I sure don't regret my career change and I'm sure you won't either. Good luck!

All the best for your new job, Carl.
I have had many jobs in my working life and I always think leaving is a bit weird.
You build up quite close relationships with colleagues and sometimes clients, and then you're gone, and the question arises "Do I try to maintain contact with these people?"
In spite of good intentions, I have usually found that people just move on with their own lives and the contacts get left behind. That's life.
On occasion though, you make a lifelong friend, and that's always rewarding.

Thank you again guys.

I did talk to a few customers of mine. I didn't want to make a big deal out of me leaving as I'm just a clerk in a store but when you've seen the same people for 4 years I thought it wouldn't be respectful to leave without saying just a quick bye. I warned my regulars that I wouldn't work here anymore and they all wished me luck, some even told me they appreciated the service I offered them. It was nice knowing that my work was appreciated as when you work with the public you get some days where you feel like it's not...

I'm not really planning on keeping contact with customers, the idea is to turn the page and say that it was great to help them but that I'm moving on, I wouldn't have expected any of them to try to stay in touch and they haven't. As for co-workers, I still have some of their phone numbers but they were much closer friends than customers (obviously) so I'll never mind a text message if they ever decide to send me one, either way I left in good terms and it's all that matters.

Carl,
Congratulations! I'm late to this thread, but I'm so glad you are going to be working in your chosen field, even though it is hard to leave a nice job situation. They will miss you in one place and be so glad to have you in another. :-)

So will you work as a watchmaker or a Thermin player?

It's always nice to try something new, when I was a kid loyalty to the same employer was the normal but today
people not stay at the same place for life.

Just make sure you have a great relationship to your old boss, maybe you want be back one day, you never know.

Good luck my friend.

A little late to the party, but best of luck on the transition, Carl. It's great that you left your old position on good terms. You never know when those early contacts may become helpful.
