Sub or Explorer?

I had the same issue deciding between the Explorer and a Sub just a few weeks ago. When it came down to it, the Explorer won me over and I've been very happy with my decision. You really can't go wrong with either, so close your eyes and imagine what's on your wrist... then go out and get what you see!

Both are great watches. I have a sub but I don't dive but I do wear it in the pool. I will one day get a EXP I as it's on my list. I think it's a great watch.

If you are planning on getting both eventually, get the Exp first - it goes with anything.

If you are planning on getting just one, get the Sub - it is the iconic Rolex and also goes with anything; it just won't fly under the radar when you want to be low-key.

If you are like most here, you'll end up with both!

When they put the correct size hands on the Explorer I'll get one. (the 36mm Exp is a little small for me). Until then, I guess I'm a Sub guy.

Hi All,
Thank you for your opinions. We have an outcome:

I decided to go for the Explorer 1, 14270, U series. I like the size, the fact that it is easily wearable with suit and could not really value the difference of the 11470. Also, being a U series, with Luminova and “Swiss” dial attracted me.

But I did not stop here: I also bought a dress watch Cellini Danaos 6229/8 for my wife.

Both were bought at Stropianna (eora.it), which was an experience by itself. I will review that on the Who’s who section.

Photos will come, but only after Christmas…

Good for you. You made exactly the right choice...also the one I would have made....36mm. Timeless! The James Bond / Ian Flemming watch. This will be a keeper forever. The Explorer 1 WILL never and CAN never go out of style. The absolute most multi-functional watch made by Rolex IMHO.

Hi All,

Although I said I would not use my new Explorer before Christmas, I could not resist. I decided wear it today and to bring it to one of the local AD, just to certify that all was ok and add a link (had to find a reason, right?). So I did, and was happy to know that it is the real deal. In fact, the movement is in pristine condition, as the watch overall. It is not really a surprise, as we can “feel the quality”, but I’m very happy for the confirmation. Great rating to the AD, Bucherer in Zurich, for their pleasant service and for charging only the extra link. I did appreciate that.

I did not check the Cellini I bought for my wife. Perhaps will do it later on, but I’m very positive that all is ok.

Now, I can’t resist to share with you one story:
The Cellini is Christmas present for my wife. She has no idea about it and I wanted to add some spice to it. So, I told to my daughter, 6 years old, that I would offer a painting to her mother. I know that she would like it, but would be moderately excited. Of course that in the same day, my daughter said it to my wife (in front of me!!! You cannot trust children). My wife said: “It is unbelievable that you conduct successfully a company, and then trust on a 6 years old girl”. Ahahaha. The plan worked! I will have so much fun on 24th eve.

I currently own a GMT which is very similar in someways to the style of the Sub. I am currently in the process of trading my GMT for a Explorer 39mm. The GMT is a beautiful watch and I love it, but for me it just screams Rolex and that is something I do not like. The reason for the trade is I want a quality classic design, that is also rugged and I think the Explorer captures all of this if its a daily wearer, one watch.

The Sub. is more useful - use it to time events, use it for elapsed time or future time, etc.
The new bracelet is an advantage.
Plus it's wr to 300 meters.
Dollar for dollar the best deal in the line.
To me the 39mm Explorer's hands are too short.
