Far too many issues for it to work as a real business

I would think they simply clean the watch before re-renting. I wonder what happens with scratches. Do they repolish all the time or do you rent a scratched up watch? I would assume they're insured and that cost has to be tied into the monthly fees, for damages, or sadly if a watch doesn't get returned...
Wonder how the business will do. |

I wouldn't mind trying a watch out that I'm interested in buying for a few days or maybe a week. A month? Probably more than I'd want/need but I don't think it makes sense to "rent" a watch for several months/years.
But some people like having access to that kind of variety, as maybe they'd get bored of having just 1 luxury watch. In a way I kind of look at it as similar to leasing a car - after a few years, you have nothing to show for the 10s of thousands of dollars you spent on the car. How is this really any different? |

Anything you can buy for less than 10k isn't worth renting, imo..

The WIS crowd is not their target market, it's the wannabes who are looking to impress people but not willing to work hard enough to earn it...

I knew a fellow whose motto, after his second divorce, was "If it floats, flies, or f**ks, I lease it." Maybe he'd sign up for this...

Here is the issue that I have with this. If I was to put a little money down at my local dealer, I could get a number of these watches used (as these would be) for a similar interest free, monthly payment.
Even the watches that you couldn't do that on, you have some equity, even if you sell yours at a loss. |

I imagine there will be many individuals who will use this service and have fun wearing different watches every couple of months...but I will not be one of these renters. At my age, I know what I want and what I will save for and buy to own, have and enjoy ...I was raised to do without until you can pay with cash and always buy quality over quantity!!!

Not for me and can't see this as a viable business model but to each his own.

I could see it being popular with celebrities, wannabees and superficial blingy types without the income to buy their own. There seem to be a lot of 'Flash in the pan' types getting their brief fame window for which this service would be perfect. I could also understand flippers and the indecisive or newbies using it to try a style or a brand out. Rolex, Hublot or Panerai- they're all so different why not try and see what "fits". I believe well established watch enthusiasts will continue to save and own what they like.

Sounds like a lot of u are against it but a lot of people lease or finance cars like Ferrari not because they cannot pay the cash up front but for other reasons.
Doing the same thing for a watch seems a bit odd because people normally don't do this for a watch but i could see it being more widely accepted. I'm sure when auto financing first became available many said the same thing about it--those superficial poor idiots are paying monthly to buy something they can't afford.

With proper residual values it might work. But the real problem is with repo's and insurance.
With cars they can be found and repo'd much easier than watches - risk of loss is lower. With cars the lessor can demand continuous collision and comprehensive coverage to maintain residual value - no such insurance on watches, just loss coverage. The thing we might not realize is serial flippers are actually leasing anyway...in the sense they hold the item for a short period and just keep rolling any residuals into the next item.

Not sure the logistics would work on this one.. That being said, might be nice to have a piece for an extended test run.
