I would think Phu My Hung is safer. I wouldn't say district 1 is safe either - i've heard some stories.
I'd think most people just assume those watches are fakes especially if you didn't just hop out of a 7 series or S class. When i was there i didn't bring the daytona etc, just something like my speedy which was OK. no concerns, i was told to be more worried about my phone (when i'm using it out in public) and cameras. |

Its safe there. But thats if you keep out of those sleazy places and trouble you should be ok. And keep your wits about you. I traveled there quite often wearing my watch no worries. Nobody actually took a second look. That is unless you are wearing a full gold. I am sure gold will catch attention anywhere.
On the contrary, Be more wary of your phones and wallet. Be careful about leaving them in table tops. |

Lived in Saigon for 3 years until last year. I (and my colleagues) wore nice Panerai's, Rolexes and other nice watches every day - to work, in taxis, bars, night clubs, walking around, etc, etc. Never ever had a problem or felt threatened. As others have said, be careful about using iPhones etc on the street and keep bags over shoulders. Women should be careful of scooter riders snatching necklaces. But watches, no issue. Be careful like anywhere in the world, but frankly you are far more likely to have a problem in major European cities than in Vietnam. In fact, expats are far more likely to have their dogs "dog-napped" for ransom while walking them by gangs on scooters - particularly in An Phu/District 2 - than have a watch stolen from their wrists.... So be careful, but don't be afraid to enjoy your watches as an expat in Saigon. And enjoy it! Absolutely wonderful place which I would return to tomorrow if I could.

I go there often for work. I am usually wearing a rolex when I do. I have never felt out of place or uncomfortable with it. Like all big cities, there are good parts of town and bad. For work or tourism you are no likely to end up in a bad part of town unless you are really looking for it.
