Most people don't notice. Those that do look, give me the "silent nod" sort of like E.S.P. ... Because they are usually wearing a nice watch as well...

I've owned several watches from both Rolex and Cartier. My first Cartier was a Santos Dumont Carre in SS. The 1979 model. I was 20 years old when I bought it and the first reaction (in a club) was: "that must be a fake". The second Cartier was a Tank Vermeil with an alligator strap and silver dial. No reactions as this is a modest watch. The first Rolex, a 16610, spiked the same reaction as the Santos: "that IS a fake". People just cannot understand that someone who isn't 'loaded' would spend that much money on a watch. On a real Rolex. I made the mistake to bet my monthly pay against the word of the doubter. He backed off and mumbled "well, it must be real then". Once I would have considered those remarks as an insult to my integrity. Not any more.

Never any comment, except one from a sales guy wearing a Datejust.

I've gone to cheaper jewelry stores and tried on Seikos and G-shocks and caught the person behind the counter doing a double-take at my watch.

As an addition: it all is in the eye of the beholder and Rolex are the proven masters of marketing. People can drool all over a Day Date but never notice the Patek Philippe 3939 in white gold on your wrist

Similar thing happened to me.. I went to the jeweller across the way from my AD to squiz at some Pannies. The saleslady notices my Rolex and asks if I'm enjoying it. I say it's great but I've liked te big Panerais too.

Her sales pitch involved trying to say pannies were the way forward since rollies were becoming common. Said thanks and left!

Panerai and Lange are the only ones that RARELY generate a comment and curiousity. Everyone knows Rolex. I see them all the time and never think to comment, especially since so few Rolex owners are WIS. You see a Panny, AP ROO, Lange, etc and approach the owner in a non-threatening way and you're likely to have an interesting watch conversation. Conversations on Rolex usually involve the price and why it's worth it...or not. No interest in those tiresome discussions.

Well that was a silly thing for her to say.

For those that into watches and want something a bit more unique will find many options aside from Rolex.

Nobody ever says anything to me.

Well last night a woman grabbed my wrist and wanted to see it up close.

Just glad she did not drug me and three of her accomplices beat me with thier heels!!

The one watch I wear that does get lots of comments is a Tag Heuer "Steve McQueen" Monaco. But it's the nonWIS types that just like it because it fits into the large watch fad rather than because it's an automatic Swiss watch. Kinda ruins the fun of wearing it. On the otherhand a WIS will quickly comment and it's nice to converse with others passionate about Swiss mechanical watches.

Only comment I have received on a watch was for my Aqua Terra.

I had a guy just the other day noticed my watch and asked "Is it real?" and I responded with "What do you think?" He just looked at me and smiled and said he's never seen a real one. I kindly smiled and walked away.

I don't feel the need to explain myself to anyone, if they think it's real or not. I know that it is and go about my way.

I'm a university professor and last night, a class i'm teaching had split up into groups of 4 or 5 to discuss their projects. As I was circulating around, one group had two attractive females and as I sat down next to them, they commented on my GMT being a nice watch. I mentioned it was a Rolex and they got really excited and said that they noticed "nice things" and had been eyeballing it since the course started a few weeks ago. Needless to say, the other two people in the group (guys) had some pretty funny looks on their faces as the girls were fawning over the watch...lol

I have friends in low placeses and DD doesn't get a second look. Just as well if they knew the worth it would disappear.

What's your definition of "friends"? Seems to me you've got no trouble calling them scumbags.

Actually, i won't be in San Diego for too much longer. I have just accepted a faculty position in Washington State and will be moving there to set up a laboratory during the summer. Too crowded in Southern California these days anyway - my wife and I are looking forward to more of a small town atmosphere to raise the kids in.

Hey, look on the bright side. If the taking you took, and counting, is from a divorce; or equivalent, it means you should have at least $3,000,000 for yourself. Could be worse.

In 7 years of daily wear, only 3 people have mentioned they noticed. I have caught 4 or 5 more people that were sneaking looks but were classy enough not to say anything in mixed company.

Rolex = horrible choice if you want attention
Ferrari = fantastic choice if you want attention

As a side note, I have noticed one of my co-workers has a variety of very expensive watches. He has something from just about every big name in very expensive watches (makes my SS Rolex look cheap). However, I have never said a word.

Ι bet that your watch has greated sentimental value than the watches of your co-worker cause you've been wearing the watch for 7 years and i am sure that you had many good and bad times with it. You cannot buy sentimental value and your SS sub date is not cheap at all

Makes me crazy when I'm out somewhere and I'm wearing my solid gold vintage Rolex and the gal next to me wearing the Wal-Mart $19.99 "bling" watch gets a dozen compliments and no one even notices I'm wearing a watch!

Yeah, you seem to do a lot of things loosely, and then ironically you get picky on specific words.

By the way, you link's been removed, sport. If you want to get taken to the cleaners a second time for slander, do it on your own time but keep it off my forum.
