Don't take the layoff personally. These types of bad things happen to good people who did nothing to deserve it except work hard and try to do a good job every day. Your career did not go down the tubes. You still have a license in a very hard skilled trade so the foundation is laid and no one can take that from you.

And I can tell you from 1st hand experience that it isn't just the housing market either. I make my living helping to develop laser products for the military and space based reconnaissance hardware at a fortune 100 company. A week ago our facility laid off 20% of our workforce because of lack of work

Within 3 hours, 100 people were axed, processed and shown the door.

I made it through...for now. We have a proposal out for bid on a classified project. If we don't get it, my job is all but done for.

I had been saving for a Rolex, like you, hadn't had one in a long time, also like you. I was holding off because my spider senses had told me something was going to go down at work and it wasn't gonna be good

When I made it, I splurged and you will splurge too. And you'll splurge faster and healthier because you won't be smoking. Quitting will be the most positive thing you can do right now to start turning things around.

For those of us who's been there, we feel the situation. I was off for 9 mos. and I remember watching "The African Queen" (The scene where Humphrey and Kate get stuck on the boat, and the audience is shown the "Big Picture" of just how limited our visions are. It inspired me to hang on and move forward. It turned out to be a far better move, than staying on with my former company.

IT field was hit hard during the last recession. I thought that between the downturn of the economy and off-shoring I was never going to find another job. Years later I am smiling at my paranoia. You will do too! Just hang in there. There is no way this country will allow the housing industry go down the crap shoot. Otherwise, all of us are pretty much done. No housing, no American Dream.

Rolex is only a watch. I am sure you'll find a job that will allow you to get a new one in no time. Also, this is a good opportunity for kids to learn that money does not grow on trees and that sometimes you have to suck things up and move on. Good luck to you and your family!

That is a terrible setback but if you have severance pay and unemployment that will help somewhat. I know it's little consolation but perhaps you can make a little $$$ on the side with your talents. I know I would personally love to have an electrician nearby to do work at reasonable prices - just something to think about.

Jim, things might look bleak right now but try to look on the positive side. You're a journeyman skilled tradesman with marketable skills to offer. I know that it'll be an upheaval, but you'll come out of it OK.

Think positive mate, you obviously have the love of a very special woman, who in bad times thinks of you and your "sickness".

Spend some quality time with kids. Forget the watch for while.

Print off some flyers, stick them in mail boxes, somebody may need a sparky for some general work. You never know, one door closes another opens up.

I look at this as a positive. I have a whole life ahead. Thank you all for your words. As for my wife all I can say is I am one lucky guy. I forget to mention My 2 grand children, our 3 dogs and all my kids friends that make up our extended family. Thats why we have a Ford E350 extended Van. Again I cannot say enough about my wife. Her hearts pretty big. What she did for the 4 boys that live across from us for Christmas brought tears to my eyes. Thanks everyone; Jim

The plus being I quit cigaretts. It would have been a long year but it would have been worth it. My wife is at work now we are lucky she has a good job but things will be tite. Jim I am really sorry to hear that man. Construction is completely idling at this moment all abroad America, the situation is very delicate and I think we have but seen only the tip of the Iceberg... hopefully the president and the congress can work to aid the economy and put it back to one of the most dynamic in the world.
Jim, I hope you can get yourself another job soon. Have you thought about going solo?
