Yes, sometimes when I go out with my friend who has an AP Royal Oak people will notice my sub but not his AP. When they ask about his watch, they'll say cool watch, what kind is it? He'll reply Audemars Piguet and then they say "Oh, I've never heard of it before."

I too hide mine in certain circumstances so as not to offend others.

I would rather my lawyer wear a Rolex and drive a nice car,and why not, it says you are pretty good at your job. It is a bit like an investment banker driving a rubbish car......would you invest money with somebody like that ! That's not being arrogant or anything like that, its just how life is perceived !

for the brand.

Let me ask this: are you similarly worried about what folks think
of what you wear, what you drive, where you live?

If the answer is yes, you may have "issues" that go beyond the watch
you wear.

All due respect, that thought process is ignorant. While I know that I have "issues", the fact that I am aware of how other people perceive me has greatly helped me advance in my career.

And lets be real: people base their initial opinions, often times the most important, on appearance. We can't control how we look (I suppose we can through working out to some degree), but we can surely control these other factors.

I don't care so much in regards to where I live, but I absolutely dress and drive to present a certain image. As I mature, that image changes. I am much more comfortable driving a 60k dollar car and wearing 20k dollar watch with my $150 jeans.

But if I presented myself this way 10 years ago, I am absolutely certain that it would have adversely affected my ability to make certain impressions.

My "issues" are in regards to other things.

As watch lovers on this site we are a very, very small minority of watch wearers.

Few can spot brands/styles on sight and I feel the OP's original fear to be unfounded. My guess is that no matter how uncomfortable the wearer is, the other person has absolutely no idea what the watch is, nor do they care.

Absolutely not. It will only make your clients and opponents take you more seriously. I had countless initial conversations with soon to be clients regarding my watches.

I too am in sales, I usually wear my Aqua Terra or an older Rado during meetings. Most people don't know what they are, and they don't stand out SCREAMING Rolex and possibly "I have disposable income." These are not messages that should be conveyed when you are trying to sell something to someone. In all reality most people do not notice watches in general however, I would rather skip the potential risk of someone in this circumstance assuming I "make too much."

I get where you are coming from. It's OK to pick and choose what to wear based on occasion... For those basing your hiring criteria for a Dr. or lawyer or anything else on a watch they wear... that is a pretty silly thought. One of the top Doctors in my state drives a Camry... Maybe he's not THAT good? Please remember, being successful can be shown in many ways including building relationships, past history, results.. etc. as stated earlier pretty much anyone with a credit card can own a Rolex!

The luxurious feeling that you get when wearing a Rolex is not always a positive thing if you ask me. For some clients I'd rather hide the watch than proudly show it.
Does anyone recognize this?
I would like to hear your stories!
I would be embarrassed if I forgot to put on my pants. Embarrassed because of Rolex? Never.

I think for the most part, you are absolutely correct. But it could be that one time that makes the difference. Or makes the OP (or others) feel self conscious.

I do know that non WIS do sometimes see the date bubble and know what they are looking at, only because it has been mentioned to me. And while I can't comment if they care or not, I am certain that people make judgements.

The same way I do when I see someone driving a Ferrari.

In regards to the OP's original post, your point is valid.

Not often, but it happens at times when I am with some of my more cost conscious clients. They know I have it already so it doesn't prevent me from wearing it. Basically, I figure they want a person who has success in their field not someone who doesn't.

I respect both sets of views, wear it with pride and without conscience no matter what, or exercise some care during certain circumstance. For me, I exercise care if I feel I may offend or if I feel it's counter productive to a certain situation, in which case I wear my Omega and everything's fine..

No. I never give it a thought. 9/10 people will have no idea it's a rolex. Nor would anyone I've ever met care. I've seen waiters, bartenders, mechanics, detailers, and people at my whole foods ringing up my grocerys wearing ss rolexes. It's not a big deal. If anything, just roll down your sleeves. Now as someone pointed out, I would/did feel weird about wearing a gold rolex. I felt too young and just not comfortable with 30k on my wrist. Quick flip. But it had nothing to do with rolex. I wouldnt want to wear a gold anything right now

to be honest i don't worry about what others think when i'm wearing my rolex, omega, panerai or any of the other watches i own.

most of them have no clue what's on my wrist.

it's never hampered my ability to sign new clients or work with any of them or their subordinates.

ymmv....good luck

I fail to understand why would one offend someone if he or she is wearing a SS Rolex? It's just a watch and there is nothing offensive about it even if you wear a flashy YG Rolex. It's not what's on your wrist but rather it's how you carry yourself that matters.

Nope, Rolex is just another luxury watch make to me. No one even takes notice of my Rolex. I don't try and show it off either, I just wear it.

No as there are so many fakes and good ones. I am still surprised that the only remarks have been when I have been wearing my Breitling.

Haha, I was going to suggest getting a simple and unknown watch if it makes you feel better but I like this idea much better! An AP RO is a great idea or a VC Overseas or JLC.

No, the feel is part of the attraction. If I wanted to wear something that no one would notice and think cost $50, I'd wear a Timex.

Nothing in the watch world is as polarizing as a Rolex. I mean, does this question come up on the AP or Patek boards? Of course the "problem" is that everyone knows that a Rolex is expensive. Most non-WISs can't tell a Swiss Legend from an AP, but they sure as Hell can spot something that looks like a Rolex. I agree that no one should be "embarrassed" to wear one, but there may be a time when it is best to keep it at home.

Never. Even if I live in a country where it's "not OK" to show the things you own (watches, cars, whatever...) I would never have bought a Rolex if it was because I would feel that way.

Depends on how sensitive you are to the feelings of others. I leave mine off if I am visiting poorer relatives.
