Just back from the AD with my new S/S White Dial 116520.
I had a choice of black of white (the eternal question....if only I could afford both),
but I think (personally) the white is nicer.

Just bought mine in Jakarta last week. TIME PLACE AD in Plaza Indonesia SS Daytona White for USD 8,437.50. M series old bracelet...Was in Singapore over the weekend, made rounds to Rolex dealers but didn't find any SS, was told if they have it, they will sell for SGD 18,000. Still above premium... Duty Free in Dubai, negative as well..

The Time Place in Plaza Senayan had one at the time I got mine but I was quoted USD 8,960. Foreign exchange there changes rapidly.

(In Singapore) Watch Palace (in Lucky Plaza) has both S/S White and Black, ready stock.
Paid SGD $16,500 for mine.
(yes, I know it's a it expensive), but I wanted it badly.

so in looking at modern daytonas, after the rehaut engraving and "fat hands" took place during the Z production, is there any difference in Z/M/V before the new bracelet was introduced in late 08? please reference the 116509 if possible

Tried the WG Daytona a while ago in the mall while waiting for my wife that is running around shopping for her clothes!
Felt heavier compared to my Submariner but is was a beast and felt like superman while wearing it!!!

Here are a few pics---maybe you and the other members can tell me what I've got. Again, been told floating cosmog., porcelain dial (raised numbers shows this?) inverted 6, and R serial series. I've had this watch for 20 years, didn't know all the intricacies of it when I got it, just liked the looks. You all know more than I ever will about these fine timepieces.

Somebody please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this a Mark 1 tritium dial which is labeled as "T SWISS MADE T" at the six o'clock position. This dial is very common in the early Daytonas with serial starting with R (1988) and L (1989). This is one of the more desirable configurations with the word "Cosmograph" located lower in the dial or "Floating Cosmograph". As a matter of fact, the whole text "ROLEX, Oyster Perpetual, Superlative Chronometer" is situated lower than the later dials. The sub dials use a rounded and smaller font. The sub dial at the six o'clock position (hour totalizer), the number six is inverted and appears as a "9" and not as the intended "6". This "defect" appeared in dials as late as 1994 to 1995. The sub dial at the three o'clock position (minute totalizer), had four "dash" markings between five minute markers as opposed to later dials which only had three "dash" marks. This dial configuration was only made for about one year.
I would definite keep it or have it restored as this vintage Daytonas are very sought after by collectors and enthusiast and demand a large premium.

In the year 1988, Rolex introduced a new model Daytona to the line up. This is that same model that replaced the not so popular and poorly selling (at the time) 6263/5 which were manual wind. The new Daytona (16520) had a similar design but with some new improvements.The biggest improvement was the new 4030 self winding movement which was based on a zenith movement which oscillated at 36,000 beats per hour but regulated to 28,800 by Rolex. This provided Rolex with an incredible accurate chronograph which was also up to chronometer standards in a well tried and proven movement. The other noticeable improvement was the new crown guards which were now very prominent and the new dial and sub dial layout. The bezel was now only offered in steel. This new attractive dial combination including the added bonus of a self winding movement was a big hit with Rolex customers and created a huge revival of the vintage Daytonas which were previously looked at as ugly and cumbersome. Good luck with your vintage collector's watch and enjoy it with good health.

I will be in the hunt for a White Gold Daytona in April/May. I have been trying to research the buckle/clasp on these watches. I have read in some areas a new or more desireable clasp was made. What is the history of the clasps/buckles? Have they been through many changes or just a few and maybe a couple of overhauls?

The Daytona is just an awesome watch. I have been wearing my 116520 white dial for about a month now (on and off, wear mostly to work) and I am just more and more in awe each time I put it on or take it off and set it on the nightstand. The clasp (I have the slightly older on in the D series) is great, and I actually think the PCL's work well on this watch.
