I have to say, I don't place a huge emphasis on having everything painstakingly handcrafted, but there's something nice about a watch that is kind of exclusive.

Rolex and Omega are able to pioneer technological improvements in watchmaking because they can divert the cost of new machinery and R&D over a lot of watches, and they sell high-tech, extremely accurate watches as a result. But Vacheron and PP and AP are making watches that are really beautiful, painstakingly handcrafted, and legitimately rare.

I don't know if I'd covet those things in a stainless steel sports watch the way I might in a dress watch, and I would not pay a $4000 premium over something like a GMTIIC, which is a really cutting edge watch, for those qualities, especially since, to the extent my watch impresses people, I am more concerned with impressing women (who would recognize Rolex) than rich guys (who would recognize more exclusive watches). But realistically, if I weren't paying for it, I'd take an AP or a VC over a Rolex any day of the week.

Why would you say that when they are both much more expensive than the Daytona (even at grey market prices) and the Speedy is cheaper?

How do their service prices compare with Rolex's? Slightly off topic, just curious...

To clarify: I would choose the Daytona anyday!

Actually, VC owners think the bracelet is incredibly comfortable on the wrist. My impression, however, is that it's a very large watch. I've never seen one in person, though.

And VC's service apparatus is not as fast or as cheap as Rolex or Omega because it's a much smaller company, and there is a greater degree of hand-work that goes into the parts, so these smaller makers can't benefit from economies of scale. I've heard a service for a VC can take six weeks and cost $1500.
