Take your time, be sure of what you want. The nice thing about Rolex is the exact model that catches your fancy today will likely be available from a jeweler/ dealer in a year or two, or five. Not so for many other brands.

Don't need us to convince you on the 1st purchase. Try them all. See what makes you smile. I had a Breitling & IWC, but sold it for my 1st Rolex - SD. That's all she wrote.

Choice is one's own preference and just choose what you like most. However, what makes Rolex common? I think it is because of its quality, reliability etc. is wide accepted and acknowledged by people.

If you need convincing, then you're not ready to go ahead. Yet.

There is a possibility for buyers remorse if you don't know in your heart.

Lots if great brands out there.

Not sure if they are less common, or less distinguishable.

Keep looking. Take your time. Buy the watch you love, not the brand.

One more benefit: Take your Rolex to any Jewelry Store for selling or trading and you will have some interest. Just try it with a Breitling as I have. That being said, I really like and wear my Chronomat MOP face sometimes.

If you are truly on the fence...do some research on the history, the company, past wearers, reliability of Rolex, etc. and see what side you fall off.

I've had lots of Breitlings and now have a few Rolexes. Buy whatever it is that strikes your fancy - don't worry about what anyone else thinks.

I'll say this though - my tastes have changed as time goes on. I now prefer a larger watch than I used to, and I prefer something a bit less shiny than most Breitlings. So keep that in mind - what you like today you may not care for tomorrow.

On that thought, the great thing about fine Swiss timepieces is that unlike a Timex, you can resell a nice watch fairly easily. Rolexes keep their value better than B&B, by far. The best thing to do is buy used. That way if (when) you tire of it, you can sell it for not much less (and maybe even more!) than you paid for it.

Of all the B's and R's that I've owned, I only bought one new, which has saved me thousands, since I do end up selling most of them.

You can buy the Ball or Breitling, but you will eventually sell them to fund a Rolex. What you need is a heavy hitting watch, that could carry you well in most situations. Rolex is one of the few brands that is able to accomplish that.

If you want a Rolex, and it seems you do, there are two ways about it:

1. You could buy a few other watches, flip them, buy some more and flip them, repeat a few times… and then get a Rolex.
2. Save yourself some time and money and buy a Rolex the 1st time.

Don't buy a Rolex if you need convincing. Ball doesn't have an in house movement which is a deal breaker for me. Some Breitlings have an in house movements. Resale value is terrible on both. Good luck.

FWIW, no other product on the planet carries the brand recognition that Rolex does. That said, people ooh and aah over my Invictas so save yourself some money and buy one of those; the say Swiss on many of them. ;)

As said many times before Buy once Cry once regardless of the brand, buy what you want and like. And buy a little Nicer than you can afford. No regrets then, some watches hold value some LOSE a lot in price. Look for preowned or check out the trusted sellers.

Get the Milgauss. Very uncommon and no one will peg it as a Rolex. That's one of the reasons I own the Milgauss.

1. Research the brands/models that appeal to you. Ignore the fanboys (what do you think people on the Rolex Forum are going to recommend?)
2. Think about it some. Take your time.
3. Think about your finances.
4. Repeat 1, 2, and 3.
5. Repeat 1, 2, and 3 several more times.
6. When you're sure what you want, go buy it.

If you follow most threads on the forum people will buy something else but trade up to a Rolex, rarely do people get a Rolex and decide it is not the watch/brand they want.

Not here to speak for other members but I suspect the troll comments comes from the reality that this is a Rolex appreciation society so asking people to justify/convince you will be a red rag to a bull for some members. Many feel strongly about watches including Rolex so when people talk of buying a Rolex but their heart does not appear in it, makes them think keep your coins in your pocket.

I genuinely think when you go through the pro/cons of a purchase decision it is easy to justify, most of us wear a watch close to 24 hours a day and you look at probably 50 times a day, it also is part jewellery and most people wear jewellery as well. When you consider you can get a nice Rolex from around $4,000 and you are likely to get at least 90% of that back if you chose to sell it, and it will last 40 years, it becomes a pretty easy buying proposition if you have the $4k to spend. Beyond the first it becomes a hobby call and a decision on how much you can donate to it, there are many members on here that can answer that in 6 digit terms. in short a lot of people takes this seriously, and if you stay on the forum and engage you are likely to view the brand and its owners differently than as a rookie TRF member, just my $2's worth.
