I'm lucky to have both. Great watches...both worthy of being your "one and only" watch. That said, if I could only have one, it would be the 14060M. Both are classic Rolexes, but for me, the 14069M is THE classic Rolex.

I was faced with this exact problem recently. My decision was to keep my Explorer, and buy a BNIB 14060m. I believe you have indicated that you will either keep the Explorer, or you will sell the Explorer in favor of the 14060m. I know I'm in the minority here, but I don't think I would let the Explorer go. In my opinion that is just an awesome watch. In fact, I was wearing mine today, and I believe it has one of the cleanest, clearest, and easiest to read dials on a watch. HOWEVER, if you're interested in obtaining a BNIB Submariner, then I guess I would sell the Explorer to fund the purchase of a 14060m as opportunities to purchase BNIB will become fewer and fewer, and the 39mm Explorer should be available in the current reference for a long, long, long time should you decide to reacquire down the road. If you're not interested in buying BNIB, then I would just save for a pre-loved 14060m, and hang on to the Explorer you already have.

I'm sort of in the same boat right now.
I like the Explorer and like the no date, yes, one costs a bit more than the other, for me I would go with the Explorer first, not because it is versatile but because it is simple and laid back, works well with both dress and casual, like jeans and a tee. The simplicity of the Explorer is where it is at for me. Don't get me wrong the no date Sub rocks also, but for my first Rolex I do think it will be an Explorer. When I'm old and all tired out the Explorer is what I will want to have on my wrist that has been with me for years. Again something simple but yet pronounced. Now all I have to do is become a "Pledge Member" and try to get a decent figure for my Planet Ocean. And sell mabey a few other watches. I also think that this will be happening very soon. Because I really desire to be a part of this community, not to mention own a Rolex.

One watch? Explorer! Dresses up and dresses down.
For almost everyone who owns one, the dial on the sub is superfluous. Yes, it looks cool, but most owners are dest divers. Perhaps they get it wet 2x per year in the backyard pool or accidentally in the shower. Note, I say most. This is not ALL inclusive. I have recently been thinking of the 36mm Oyster Perpetual with blue dial and arabic numerals. It has a better clasp than the Explorer and lume in the numerals and sticks. |

Explorer for me
I was facing the same problem, but decided on the Explorer in the end, more versatile IMHO. No wrong choice though. Like you I am a one watch type guy and could not justify both, unless I won the lotto

I think you should keep the Explorer and save for the Sub.
I own a 114270 and a 14060M and while the Sub gets the most wear of the three Rolex watches, I wouldn't think of selling either my 114270 or my 116200 63600. However, if you must flip the Explorer, the Sub is the best substitute.

The watch snob said there are only 4 watches that could be worn on every occasion:
1. Rolex Sub 2. Rolex Datejust 3. AP Royal Oak 4. IWC Portuguese Me? I say wear whatever you want wherever you want |

I have decided to stick with the explorer 39mm, having tried on the sub yet again I realise it's a lovely watch bit it just screams Rolex. I love the understated look of the explorer and the simplicity of the dial.
In my opinion the explorer 39mm is the perfect all round everyday watch - minus the date obviously!! |

Keep the Explorer
For what it's worth, I find the Sub too much of a cliche (as great as it is). My advice is keep the Explorer. It is a very special piece and I can't help but fear that you will deeply regret it if you let it go...

Yes the explorer 39mm if defiantly the keeper, the sub is lovely but has not got the simplicity of the explorer.
I am just going to have the bezel on the explorer brushed to give it a more tool look, it would be great to see a pic if anyone has already done this? |

Hmmmm.....glad you decided to keep the Explorer, I really like mine for everyday and almost every kind of use; however, with respect to brushing the bezel, afraid I'm going to have to part company with you there. Nonetheless, enjoy your watch.

I am not sure I have done the right thing. I decided yesterday to keep my explorer, then over night though about it an put a deposit in the sub for a Px with the explorer.
I have not done the exchange yet, and can still get my deposit back, but today realised how much I love the new bracelet and clasp and now I am having second thoughts as I don't know how I will manage with the old style hollow bracelet which I have read it has. Advise please? |

Same as before. Keep the Explorer, save for a new Sub C that you purchase later. But that's just me.
Sounds like you may have to make the switch and just come back to the Explorer at a later time.

I got rid of a 39mm Explorer I'd owned from new. It was mint condition. Big mistake. I replaced it with a used and not quite perfect one, and whilst I'm very happy with it, it's still not my original one I was stupid enough to get rid of. That's just my story, of course.
The bracelet and clasp really makes it feel like it's in a different league compared to my 40mm Explorer II. Sent from my phone

I traded my 36mm Explorer for a Submariner 14060M. I like the 14060M more.

Fortunately I can always back out and receive my deposit back. I do love the explorer but I also love the sub ND, having both is really not an option so I have a big decision to make by 1pm tomorrow.
I see it that I will always be able to trade the sub ND back for an explorer 39mm, where as the random serial number sub ND is harder to come by as a full set. The difference is price is small, my 2010 explorer 39mm full set + £700 for the 2011 sub ND full set. I realise the bracelet will not be the same, however they have held up for years, and although the explorer 39mm bracelet and clasp will always feel better I guess I can live with the older style clasp. I basically want a watch I can wear every day, can suit all occasions, flys under the radar and holds it's value. Any more advise or thoughts would be greatly appreciated |

Well, as I read your thought process, I would go ahead and make the switch. You really can't go wrong with a Sub ND, given what you are looking for. (Just commenting on the watch switch itself…I am no expert on Exp 1 or Sub ND prices).

The EXP I is a beautiful watch & I hope to some day own one myself but I would never trade my sub for one. I would however trade a EXP I for a sub. The prices on the discontinued subs are rising therefore I would buy the sub now.
