Its my grail watch & I have wanted one for 25 years, but couldn't afford one,if I had the money then I certainly would of got one.
I'm now in my forties and have been fortunate to have owned one for the past 7 years

IMO, the President model is less popular because of the price. Newer pre-owned models (2000 - Present) can cost 13-17K. Brand new models are almost 25K. Add a diamond dial or bezel and you are quickly entering another relm.

I don't buy the term old mans watch at all...sorry.

I think the President is more "rare" (ie. less popular) due to its price. I am 35 and just bought this 4 mo's ago. I wear it every day

I bought mine pre-owned in 1988 for $6600 when I was 38. It's an 1981 vintage DD and I added the black diamond dial when I bought it. I wore it daily for several years until the mainspring broke. I just got it back from repair and am going to add a link to fit my fat wrist since I haven't worn it for a few years and have gained weight. I plan to wear it to work like I did before.

In 1988, new DD's were going for $14,000 I believe, but I could have a faulty memory since I must now be an old man since I wear a DD.

I agree with Kurt! The DD is a grail Rolex for me, but way out of my budget for the time being.

I love my DD - bought it last December. It is extremely well finished. I hadn't realised, before I bought it, that the crystal is convex, as opposed to the totally flat crystal on my Date Just bought last September.

Certainly a watch for occasions, but I tend to wear mine most days.

For those that aspire to one - get saving, it's worth it when you walk out of the ADs with one on your wrist!!

I would love to buy a new sub, I don't wear my old 5513 sub anymore, mainly because I hate to take off the DD. As far as "old man's watch", I'm older than most here but there are plenty of young guys wearing a DD as mentioned in the other posts. That was more the case years ago.

One of the reason I asked is I saw this for under $5000, and thought that would be a great way to get into a day/date for a good price. I know little about them, any insight would be apprecaited.

I am by no means an expert on these DD's but that ones bracelet looks like it has quite a bit of streach even in that picture.A new President bracelet will set you back a good bit more than the price they are asking for the watch.
I think a good used range for them is at least 9K and more than likely the 12-15k range for a nice tight newer model.IMHO 5K limit is better spent on higher condition Sub or just put it in the GLD (gold ETF) and it will get to that 15k range in time.

It really depends on two major things: model and bracelet. That 1803 is a classic, with plastic (acr) crystal, but bracelet shows some stretch. A nice condition 1803 can fetch up to 10 grand easily. If you want to get your hands into the DD vintage craze; try one on a strap; they look awsome and you can save big money.

As far as the model; it is up to you. Which way do I go? Manufacture dates more than models. Dad's present: a DD mfd in the year I was born. My first DD: when my daughter was born. My second DD: mfd also on the year I was born.

Some people go for the model (1803, 18038, 18238, etc.) and some for 'dates', and some just for the look and feel. Either way, it is a FANTASTIC watch!

i think the key is to buy preowned about 5 yrs-10 yrs. old, double quick set, and something PRETTY like lardog has. I'm an 'old man' but at 30 I would've loved one on my wrist, as I am certain many 30 yr. olds on this Forum would agree.....'old man' watch my ass!

I am an "Old Fart" (72)~ and I love my DD, purchased a few months ago just like the picture Bo shows on the forum. I can't decide if I love my Air Conditioned New Holland Tractor as much as much DD. I give my Z series GMT II SS more wrist time. The DD just goes round and round in the winder! Special occasions at my age come only now and than.Sorta like sex. You young studs stay cool your time will come!! Bill

ive learned that to get the best discounts, you have to wear your most expensive watch when you are shopping; only then do the AD's take you seriously....

Man, I'm really eating my foot on this one. What I said kind of cam out all wrong, so let me see if I can explain it better.

The kind of guys I see wearing DDs don't seem the type to post on internet forums much. Not because they don't know how or anything, they just aren't into it. They're the type of guys that don't wear flahy Italian suits, but rather more conservative English suits. The type of suit that doesn't jump out to the average bystander, but yet gives off a kind of "quiet cool".

Or, even if they are just wearing shorts and a polo shirt, the fit and finish of those shorts and shirt tell you that it is not your average store bought shirt, bought something that came from a taylor.

They are the type of guys that drive a nice Mercedes, or even Bently or RR, when they could be more flashy with a Ferrari or Lambo, but they just don't care.



I guess to sum it up, the kind of guys that I have seen wearing DDs are the kind that appreciate luxury for what it does for THEM, not how it looks. They don't care about other atches, and movements, and holograms or LECs or CRBs. They just want the best of the best for their own interests.


Now, I'm not saying that us WISs are bad, or that we are trying to impress anyone. Honestly, I really don't know how else to explain it other than the guys I've seen with DDs are generally very wealthy, cool, and keep to themselves. They don't seem to be the type to join internet forums. Cool?
