Everyone I thought I saw in the wild, turned out to be either a Michael Koros or an Invicta, I'm in northern California . I have friends that have the TT and SS models but outside of them nada.

What I've noticed about Daytonas is that there seem to be quite a few available on the used market. Check Ebay for evidence of this. I can't speak for the availability of new watches at ADs, but although used Daytonas seem almost common in the marketplace prices of the SS models don't seem to be moving off MSRP very much, maybe $2-3k at the most even for 10-20 YO watches. This is based on current MSRP, not what was paid originally, and compared to prices paid when new these used watches are going for more. Thus, I don't see where the Daytona is becoming commonplace nor that prices are falling, as most people won't pay even $9K+ for a watch. OTOH gold and TT Daytonas seem to lose quite a bit of their original cost rather rapidly, as has been discussed here quite a bit lately.

In the south bay area I'm seeing more TT DJ than anything else. In sports models I've seen more Dayton's than Subs and GMT's...

I have not seen a Daytona in the wild but subs are so common even the cab driver that picked me up from JFK last week was wearing one

I don't see many in the wild compared to other models. Daytonas are timeless - and dateless. Flipped my SS one for a blue dial TT; I like mine but they seem more popular on the for sale boards than in real life. Maybe I'm just in the wrong places.

Not sure about 'ordinary'. Can't see the 'ordinary' public spending 12K on a watch.

Seems that the mystique about them, is not as it was before.

Always have been. Here I would say 60% of Rolexes are Daytonas. It has never been any mystique with me about them.

Personally it's never sang to me like many other references. I don't consider any Rolex "ordinary" in my eyes despite the volumes that are out there, but there are many there I'd take before going for a Daytona.

In HK you see them in the wild everywhere, I meant it, especially black ss Daytona, pretty much see them at least one per day.
