No, not because I wouldn't, but because I'm still hung over from last night!!!

On the plane now, and he's a row behind me. If he was next to me...yes. I would have talked to him.

The other day, I had a lady with EXP I next to me. We had a great conversation, as my wife wears an EXP I.

Edit: So the guy that just sat down next to me has an EXPII. Yes, I spoke to him. He's also got a YM at home.

Lets hope he doesn't think you're trying to pick him up!

I have thought people might think you're a potential thief but never a potential date before this thread! Always learning here...

I don't understand people saying to not say anything. Only downside is possibly a strange look and on the upside you might have an interesting conversation.

If someone asked me about my watch, I'd see it as a compliment .... Unless I thought it was a pick up

My experience is the conversation with a random Rolex wearer usually...usually mind you does not turn into a WIS like conversation.

This is more the norm:

Hey nice DateJust.

Uhh...it's a Rolex!

Oh...uhh...yeah.

I also wouldn't have made a comment. Monday while at Publix here in FL a middle aged man was at deli behind me and he clearly had a YG YM2 on his wrist and it was gorgeous... I wanted to comment but didn't say a word, nice to see in the wild though

No doubt! We ended up talking the entire flight -- just touched down.

Now...let's see how my next flight goes...

It's all about context. I don't comment on new Rolexes, from experience doesn't pay off. Now vintage on the other hand does. Commented on a Paul Newman Daytona, really old vintage explorer, and an old pepsi GMT. All of them talked to me for quite some time. The GMT and the explorer owner didn't know watches but they shared great stories about the watches. The Paul Newman dude knew watches.

I have had better luck commenting on Seikos, zodiac sea wolfs, Hamiltons, Tudors and the like. So called WIS stuff.

Hopefully you didn't spot those watches in the bathroom while watching people peeing.

You: "Hey, that's a nice looking tool you have."
Him: "What the hell?"
You: "Uh.... your watch, of course."

I was once seated on a plane next to a guy wearing a 1675 GMT....I happened to be wearing the same exact watch...we had a really nice conversation, but while I was a collector, it was just a watch he inherited from his dad. But both were 1967ish Pepsi gMTs.

I have had 2 different Doctors mention my watch. No one in the general population has even noticed. Living in Hicktown.

I recently commented to my doctor on his beautiful Vietnam era GMT. He said his father gave it to him when he graduated medical school but he never wore the watch until after his father was dead for two years. He actually took it off and handed it to me. I held it while he spoke briefly about his dad. It was in very nice condition too. I handed it back to him with great appreciation and we got on with the official visit. I do think however that caution should be used when making comments to folks about their watches.

I think context is the key, without a doubt.

Still on my last flight home, but no Rolexes with my seat neighbor.

Agree. 99.9 Percent of Rolex owners are not watch freaks like those of us who populate these forums....

Nothing ventured nothing gained.

If I see a watch worth looking at then most of the time the wearer knows what he has.

Here is an example of how these things go...

When I was younger I was at a local bar. The dude next to me had a Breitling B1 on with a blue dial. Very cool watch.

I was wearing my Pepsi GMT Master II.

I complimented the guys watch and asked him how he liked it...Then I mentioned I was considering buying one...

He said "Son this is a Breitling watch for pilots and it's very expensive..so I'm not so sure about you getting one anytime soon"...

I then showed him my ROLEX and asked, "Do you think it costs more than this"?

He gave me a dirty look and I just moved on...

I've had a few other encounters that weren't as condescendingly confrontational, but they were more along the lines of "yeah it's a Rolex....and....???""

So IMHO I would never approach a stranger about their watch again. The odds of a positive conversation are very, very low...

It just isn't worth the effort quite frankly...

It sounds silly but rolex people are way less into conversation than panerai/patek/AP wearers. Perhaps it's because a lot of non watch enthusiasts wear Rolexes where the other batch are a little less common?

But I do try to comment in strangers watches as often as possible - especially rarer ones.
