You might lose it in a nice deep dish pie! Be careful of the FINS (blues Brothers ref)

I agree, it's sad that some of you beat the guy up for asking a question for all of us. I live in the Chicago burbs and unless I was traveling by myself, with short sleeves on...say to a Cubs game, I would not hesitate to wear it. You will be fine, just don't be too flashy. Have fun, and welcome to Chi-Town.

Sounds like a good trip. It's good to get outside your comfort zone. 99.999% of the time is a great experience.

I wore an 18kt bluesy for a week.
You may want to stay out of the south side.
But really you wear a Rolex. I thought they were all safe queens these days.

I would wear the GMT, it is more likely to get stolen from your hotel room than from your wrist. That is why I wear all of my clothes while traveling in Chicago :)

Don't worry, wear it.

The reality when you are tourist in a city you dont know where you should and should not be. I have been a tourist/stranger in Chicago 3 times, i remember the first I was staying at the Chicago Hilton Towers, when I was there a person was stabbed at one of the entrances. In many cities including big US ones you can easily stumble into the wrong part of town. So if you feel safer as Grady has said leaving you watch in a vault do it.

I know my home town of Sydney I would call safe, but people (mainly Irish back packers!!!) get mugged often because they end up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I live in Tampa and had a gun put in my face, my sub taken....almost told him to shoot me for it. Public transportation is not the best place to wear a Rolex.

I once took the bus from The Museum of Science and Industry across the south side of town to Midway Airport when visiting Chicago. This was at the suggestion of one of the people working the Customer Service desk at the museum. It took over 2 hours to get to the airport, and I felt like I had left the United States. I stuck out like a sore thumb on that bus. I almost missed my plane.

This is the only time in my life I felt like I was probably going to be mugged. Otherwise, I felt very safe in Chicago. Btw, I wasn't wearing a Rolex at the time.

I think you really have to know yourself. If you emanate vibes of fear or nervousness, you may be selected as a target regardless of where you are. If you have a level of self confidence, muggers may pass you by and look for a weaker target.

I'm guessing you are young. My advice: have your rolex insured and enjoy it. And think about some self defense courses to bolster your situational awareness and confidence.

Best of luck.

True, very true. Nature can do a lot of damage too. You can be killed and still be wearing your Rolex.

Perfectly Safe

Just don't flash it around. And the same advice as goes for any city around the world - be aware of your surroundings.

You probably own a pair of Speedo's...doesn't mean you want to wear them every where you go.

If you are worried you won't feel safe then just leave it would be my advice. Worrying about something isn't fun.

What is the point of having a GMT watch if you don't wear it when traveling? :-)

Make sure it is covered by your insurance and enjoy the trip!

It's already been said, but no place is truly safe. If someone needs to eat, or needs a fix, they may attempt to take anything. Yes that includes your rolex, wallet, your sneakers! People rob armored cars, banks and multi million dollar homes everyday in this and every other country. Small towns and large cities alike. Wear it if you like, don't if you don't. And enjoy Chicago and your rolex!

You're probably right, I'm not really size-wise a Viking though!

I didn't even bring my Axe!

It's never the watch itself that one should worry about; it is the increased chance at a violent encounter because you are wearing something that increases that chance. On the other hand, staying in the major parts of Chicago or Manhattan are much safer because that is where the wealth stems along with the vast amount of people.
I will wear my watches (maybe not the YG DD) anywhere by myself, it is when I am with my wife or children that I give it some thought.

While I agree with your statement, let's be honest.

Understanding that everybody has their own level of tolerance to risk, there is no answer that will satisfy the OP's of these types of threads.

Like previously stated, if you must ask the question then perhaps they shouldn't wear it on this trip. I would wear any of my watches everywhere I go, including some seriously poor and questionably safe areas.

I don't flaunt it but I don't hide it either but I have never given it a second thought
