This is coming from a novice that is trying to learn, so my viewpoint will be different from someone that knows what they are doing.

I have read the GMT thread, Submariner/Seadweller, and the websites, but, I still had questions. The Mondani Books have such larger and detailed pictures. I was able to figure out what other articles were discussing.

The clear pictures and details, and some detail magnified even larger, allowed me to figure out the differences in the Seadweller Dials. I was pleased to find out I had a Mark I Dial. I finally figured out what Edge Surrounds were because of comparison pictures.

I like the GMT Book. Again, clear pictures and details, and some detail magnified even larger helped me figure thinks out. It helped me figure things on the GMT’s I had read, but was not sure about.

The one thing I did not like on both books was a lot of the advertisements are only in Italian. I would have liked to have read them.

As has been said elsewhere, If you are looking for a lot of history, it is not there. If you are looking for a watch, and are not sure, this has helped me a lot

The price guide that comes with both books was helpful. jmho

I never really thought of myself as a collector but recently when talking to other watch enthusiasts about wanting to have a Rolex and an AP and a PP they have said, oh so you're a collector. I think more that I am building a collection but will probably refer to myself as a collector once I have a couple more grail-type watches.

I never considered myself a collector, just an enthusiast.
Then one day I look down and there are 8 Rolex watches staring back at me in all their beauty. So as said before it depends on what your definition is. To me: collectors collect vintage watches. I always considered the vintage pieces to be the four digit reference numbers.
I have since sold the 1675 as I do "get" the vintage but just don't really have to have the true vintage. I have always been more fond of the five digit reference numbers with a sapphire crystal.
So now I'm down to seven but I've got a funny feeling that there is room to be made again as I foresee a UPS delivery truck in my near future...

Love watches collect fine wine--specifically California Cabs and blends. It is a very liquid investment and I always drink my profits.

Favorite Wines:
Hundred Acre, Colgin Cellars, Peter Michael, Harlan Estates, & Marcassan.

I'm not focused enough to qualify as a collector, and am probably better described as an accumulator.

But seriously, I just see myself as liking these watches. Definitely not a collector.

Haha! Very true that we are all nuts "in the real world". Very few of my friends/family "get it" and are shocked by the stickers prices and fixation one can develop in this hobby. Best.

Thanks for this! I have been tempted to buy a couple of their books. Great people and have actually exchanged emails with a few of the mondani family. I should order a few already! Be well.

Yes; the DDII has helped your "collector status" heh heh. Be well my friend.

8 = a good numbered collection ! I don't necessarily think one has to extra vintage to be a collector but in general I agree that is usually what comes to mind when one hears the term "collector". Best.

Very nice Ken. Yes, I enjoy your wine and Frenchy pics almost as much as your wrist shots!!

I have not gotten into "collecting" wines as I tend to drink my stock fairly quickly unfortunately! Best.

Well maybe, but now that I think about it collectors of most things do flip and trade from time to time. I don't really have any theme or reason for a watch I buy other than it's one I'd like to wear. But it's not like I'd go buy a root beer GMT just to complete the set. TBH though, if I had all but that one I might change my mind that, though with the introduction of the BLRO completing a set of GMT's just became a smidgeon more difficult.

Watch enthusiast here. Love watches, own quite a few but I've never bought a rolex to keep a piece of history.

Like any collector hobby, wine, art, antiques, you buy them not because you need them but to get enjoyment for possessing them and not even using them.

I have a friend who owns nearly ever paid of nike air Jordan's ever released. Plus some nike air max. He's a fan and he collects them in all sizes and he hasn't worn any of them.

A true collector

Collectors have collections.

I have a few+ watches of various brands to wear and enjoy & put myself in the enthusiast category.

There are plenty of watches out there I find interesting, but wouldn't consider owning.

I guess I am a selector, not a collector. I buy what can afford (first priority) and what I want (second priority). But I take a long time in making selections. The research and comparisons are the fun of it for me.

I am more of an enthusiast of a few things. I like putters, and guitars as well as my newfound love for watches. I wish I could afford more Rolex's but only have 2. Will probably get one more. So I don't know if 3 qualifies but I live vicariously through you forumites!

"Collector" is a pretty broad term.

I usually think of a collector as a person who acquires many pieces for admiration rather than wear. In that sense, I'm definitely not a collector.

If I don't wear the watch regularly, it has to go. That's the number 1 rule.

I think almost everyone on this forum is a Rolex enthusiast. Being an enthusiast lends itself towards becoming a collector. I very humbly say that I have a Rolex collection though it pales in comparison to what some people have on this forum. I always love seeing a well rounded collection but I think I truly appreciate when someone has many iterations of the same model. Mike Wood comes to mind. My personal favorite collection though is the member who has nearly every Explorer and Explorer II. I've seen his watches lying on top of a map. I just cannot recall to whom they belong.

Yes. Makes sense. I only buy stuff I wear as well bit that's the beauty of the hobby to me. Watches are a wearable piece of art, history and function all in one!

imo collector means someone who likes owning stuff for the sake of owning it. i'd say i'm a collector of all sorts of knick knacks (watches, accessories, art, air jordans)... though i only have one rolex and it's used regularly
