I have several watches from my grandfathers. Two pocketwatches and two wrist watches. Only one of the watches works, an Elgin pocket watch dated around 1904. They all need to be serviced. I love having them and more especially, having the memories they conjur up when I look at them. It should be wonderful having your watch returned back to you from the RSC in almost new condition. Ware it in good health, I'm sure your grandpa would want you to.

Coming back from golf and seeing all these responses, sure brings joy.
I located a independent watch repair that repairs Patek Philippe, Rolex, VC, etc and he gave me a quote for $250. Roughly 1 week time frame. Still deciding which route to take. Help me out.. |

Thanks for the replys about RSC.
I went to visit my friend and also wanted to show him my Rolex. He recently inherited a Rolex from his dad that was passed down. He seems to be having some doubts about his watch being real, since he can't find any pictures on the net to match his. Here is a picture: |

That looks real, in my experience you see very few fake vintage OP's.
As for which route to take...unless you have a good relationship and expeince of a watchmakers talents, I'd go with RSC this time. Why? Well the last pics you sent show some surface scratching mainly to the jubilee bracelet. RSC will polish the band and the watchcase up and as said above, it should look just like new. Once you've had it serviced and polished by RSC, I'd then consider intermittant services with a local watchmaker. Rolex can be a pain when servicing vintages as they often state, once the parts are gone, that's it!!!! By having the watch serviced every 3 years or so by a local watch maker (at a considerably cheaper cost than RSC) you'll limit wear and tear on those soon to be extremely rare and valuable (to you) watch parts. Go the main route tho, this time, splash a little money on it and get that beauty shining again, your grandfather would be proud! J |

Why not wind it and wear it?
Or is this a plonker question? :) Nice watch! Congrats! |

I'm sure others would agree with me, getting the watch serviced before wearing it. I made a mistake by not unscrewing the crown on my DJ, so it was actually moving.
pretty amazing for a watch that hasn't been running for 13-14 years. |

Phillip,
What a great inheritance your Grandpa left you - just think of the memories of happy times past and now you're blessed with his gorgeous Rolex to treasure, as he did, for the rest of your life. A great story and thanks for shring it here on TRF.

Phillip:
Sorry if I hijacked your thread. It was a private joke between Nas and I. The watch is a definite memory of your grandfather and deserves to be passed down to one of your kids who will do the same. I still have a pocket watch of my grandfather's handed down to my father and now to me. My father has been dead 20 years ago last month. I still think very fondly of him. Memories are all that are truly important in the grand scheme of things. We won't take anything else with us when we go. Take care and wear the watch in good health. Terry Newton

Fantastic! For me, this is what Rolex is about, largely, they may be expensive, but they are of heirloom quality and the recipient of such an item will love and appreciate such a thing.
I wish someone would have left me a Rolex! I bought mine in the knowledge that I'd be able to do the same for my kids |

I've said it before, the watches I've received from my grandfathers, while not Rolex's, are the ones that I treasure the most. They seem to have a life all their own. Some may not run reliably, but it still makes me reflect of the days that they were ticking and keeping perfect time on their wrists while they were alive.
