The 214270 could be the next candidate for my third 904L steel, no date and no cyclops watch.

Make sure you try them on. I was set on a GMT black a few months ago based on photos alone but after I tried it on, that bezel was just too overbearing and IMO overshadowed the rest of the watch. Went for a cleaner model.

The 39mm explorer is not my only rolex but I just love it.

I own many Rolex watches, but still wear the Exp I 39mm often in the rotation. If you are going to hang around in here, good luck with the "one and only" concept. I don't see it working that way...lol

BTW, couple of years ago, my one and only was my DSSD...now, we are way beyond that.

In the AD's window next to glossy ceramic models & larger dials the Explorer does not shout out as much but I had a client come in wearing one a couple of weeks ago and it was mesmerising such a timeless classic and as a 'one' watch would be beautiful :)

FWIW, Ive had my 1st Rolex, the Expl. going on 3 years. Since then, have bought an AK and a Thunderbird DJ to add variety. However, I keep going back to my original Expl. as my "go to" piece getting the most wrist time. As others have stated, it is very comfortable and versatile.

Even though it isn't my one and only, it certainly could be.

I guess 90% of Rolex owners have only one watch and a fair portion of those will be PM or TT, so any SS can def be an only one, just go with which appeals to you most, for me it's the Subc.

It's my only Rolex, and for me is the "middle ground" in my collection right now. I have Planet Ocean that covers the really sporty side, a Nomos Orion that covers dressy, and the Explorer for anything and everything in between... I have a couple others too but those three are the center of my collection. Here's a pic of mine:

Anyone know the thickness and weight of the new OP's versus the Explorer? All I know is they are both 39 mils.

If it is your one and only, go for the Sub. ;)

Having said all this, you really can't go wrong either way, they are both great watches. Wear what speaks to you.
I'm in the exact boat ironically. As much as I'd love a Sub, I have a Tag Aquaracer as my current every day watch. They are obviously pretty similar. I'm saving up for either an Explorer or Milgauss as my one and only Rollie. Leaning toward the Explorer today.

Also, once I get the Explorer I don't see the Tag ever getting any wrist time. The Explorer should cover every possible scenario.

My 36mm explorer is my "one and only". I have worn and enjoyed it every day for six years now. I am not letting go of it.
In my book, the Milgauss would be a very good "second watch".

This is very true....at the AD it's easy to overlook the Explorer next to it's bigger and shinier brothers.

The closer I get to pulling the trigger, the more I agree with you on this Franklin. I could certainly see myself buying an Explorer and happily wearing it every day.

I've had both Explorer and Sub ND multiple times but I always end up selling them to get something with the date! Great watches though. If I were going to have 2 Rolex I would get an Explorer again to rotate with my Sub date.

Went to the AD and looked at the Explorer today. It looks a lot bigger than 39 mm in person. Actually all of the Rolex appear to be bigger than their listed size. The Explorer looked impressive in person!

Bought my first Rolex, a 39mm explorer from DavidSW about a month ago and it's be only watch I've worn since, with jeans, business casual, and suits.

214270

My only Rolex is currently the 39mm Rolex Explorer. I owned a Datejust, a Daytona, a Sub and have finally settled on the Explorer. The only thing that was modified was the replacement of the bracelet with a NATO strap. My other watch is a Jaeger Rose Gold Reverso Duo which I wear to work and black tie events. However, for casual and weekend-wear, I opt for my 214270. It actually looks pretty good with a suit or navy blazer I might add (see pic). In sum, I recommend the Explorer.

39 mm Exp is sweet. A great watch. Own a 36, 39 and 2 Milgauss watches.

Of all of those 4, if I had to keep only one.... 39mm Exp would be it.

Those are the two I've narrowed my search to...Exp and Milgauss. I tend to think Exp will age better so leaning towards it....today anyway.

I actually had a hard time deciding between the Sub and Explorer. Bought the Sub and went back after a week to swap for the Explorer. The square lugs on my smallish wrist just didn't work for me. Loving the Explorer as my daily wearer.

The explorer is a great versatile watch... I'd definitely pick it over the sub. The current Rolex collection is quite flashy; I own a GMT Ceramic and find myself wearing my sub 5513 much more. The explorer is perfectly low key... A tool watch as intended.

I think that to the semi educated Rolex enthusiast, a new explorer 39mm will garner more respect the the average sub.

Best of luck.

My first Rolex was a 16613 sub, now I have a 214270 as my current only (looking at dj2s) Rolex. I recommend the explorer. I used to love the sub however now the only sub on my Rolex wish list, which is very long, is the 116618LN to be my flashy watch when I want one as I am not a fan of the DD2.

Try them both on. I recently went into an AD with the intent of buying a 39mm Exp I, and walked out with an 114060.
