Watches don't smell, unless of course you have one of those silly nato bands on that collect all the sweat and dirt and urine and....ewwwww enough of that.
Like Patek states in their adds, you're just taking care of it for the next generation. I could see the alure of buying new in a car or woman but doesn't it just kill you the first time you put a scratch or dent in it, with a used one you just look down after slamming it into a door knob and wipe it off and say to yourself 'patina' To each his own, keep buying those new ones guys, without you there would be nothing for me to buy

Bought one from AD and one from a gray dealer. I'd buy gray again but it will be harder for them to come by the particular datejust style I'm after, so my next purchase will probably be ordered from an AD. There are two in town very close to one another and I may try the other business next time. The AD I got my first TT datejust from (Oklahoma's "Oldest Jeweler" and very well respected) never did get the warranty card to me (they insisted on mailing it and sent it to the address of the house we were renovating and had not yet moved into - it was never found), and that was a major disappointment, particularly when I sold the watch and didn't have anthing but a photocopy of the warranty card for the new owner. I asked the AD about the possibility of replacing the warranty card and was told that was impossible. So the whole experience of my AD purchase was tainted a little. Tainted a lot, I guess- because it bothered me so much I didn't even want to bring it up on TRF and hadn't until now.

How dare you keep secrets from us...
But all kidding aside, that really stinks. If the AD screwed up by sending it to that address, he should have gone out of his way to get you a replacement....or done SOMETHING for you I say you give that other AD a shot the next time. |

Well, if you buy BNIB from an AD, you get two years warranty. Within that period, if a quality control issue occurs, you get it fixed for free. In the States, due to strict policies of Rolex USA ("RUSA"), the warranty is tied to the name on the certificate. Therefore, the owner of a preowned Rolex can not get benefit of the warranty and must pay for any service rendered. Same thing applies to watches bought from Grey Dealers - even if you buy a BNIB Rolex watch from them. Since they are not AD's, you cannot get benefit from the warranty.

I have owned 3 Rolexes and all were purchased from AD's. I guess it was mainly because I had all the $$ I needed to make the purchase and didnt mind spending that extra at the time. I received decent discounts, was treated well each time and got the factory warranty with each watch.
My last purchase, the LV that I have now, was alot of $$ for me. And the recent price increase has pushed new models to the edge. If there is a price increase before I buy again, then I will be going the gray market route from a dealer with a long, solid history. If it's pre-loved and in impeccable shape, that's fine with me. I would not buy a "beater" though. I don't "beat" my watches so I wouldnt to buy one someone has abused no matter what the price. |

I had a very good experience buying pre-owned from Watches of Swtizerland in the UK. It had benefited from a service from RSC, and peace of mind that it was authentic. However, given a choice, nothing beat buying brand new from an AD imo

No shame in purchasing pre-owned. I bought all my Rollies pre-owned.
I sent it off to RSC for cleaning and its like new again.

All of mine are pre-owned. I agree w/some of the others, let someone else take the initial hit (like a pre-owned auto). I always make sure I get the boxes & papers (if possible) & try to buy mostly newer models (except my 16700). I've got a few friends around here that I buy from plus I would buy from anyone on TRF as I think most of us would.
I don't know anyone that takes care & appreciates their Rollies like a TRF member does!

My ebay yachtmaster was - let's see - bought by a white collar criminal with company funds in 03/07 - sold to a pawn shop within a week for way less than half price - then sold to his guy the ebay seller for a couple of grand more - then sold to me with only one bid because I think the price was so low and other buyers were scared off. So I got a great 1 year old 3 owner 18k yachtmaster w/black MOP for less than half price. The original AD will take care of me if there is a warranty issue (what would that take the form of?) I'll take all those I can get & I love a good story. Although I would have rather bought from a wealthy individual for the same price, they did not make their money doin that!Preowned for me. Too bad I cannot get German delivery on a new 911 cab - preowned!

I've done both. I think it really depends on what you're looking for (and of course the price point). If you're into vintage, not much choice. LOL!
There are some great deals on very gently pre-loved pieces. |
