Either one would work. The 2mm difference is very insignificant. You can't go wrong with either.

The advantage of the 36mm is that there is greater demand for the them so in case you ever want to trade for a different model you'll likely have an easier time doing it. I realize that this is a gift and that trading is the last thing on your mind. I just ended up trading a watch my wife gave me and she was happy with my trading as long as I'm happy with what I'm wearing. At any rate welcome and enjoy your new watch which ever you choose.

IMO the 36 looks fine.
Mixing the more modern smooth bezel with a white dial and Romans on a oyster bracelet is one of the best combinations.

36mm stick hour mark gold bezel - looks like you were born with it. Great choice!

Either way you go you're a winner. Personally I like the 36mm better. Good luck on your decision and post pics when you finally land one.

I agree:
36 is right cos wider acceptance Blue/dark dial is better for yellow/brown complexion White dial always looks bigger 31/34 is meant for ladies, market perception Hope this help. Sm |

I'd say go with the 36:
The 36 on your wrist looks like the in style larger 39+ on larger wrists. Think of the future.... We all had 6" wrist at one time....as life went on some of our wrists got a little bigger...so down the road the 34" might become too small, but the 36 will be able to stay with you, as stated, for a lifetime! |

I generally spend ages debating this sort of thing but this is a no brainer 36mm (just remember people are buying 40-46mm now days), 36mm will never date, I remember when they were described as full size!
The blue really suits you skin tone, you cant go wrong I think you would live to regret a 34mm based on the present market |

As your first Rolex, I'd say 36mm DJ w/fluted bezel. As you expand your collection and fine tune it, you can acquire a 34mm OP/OPD later. Good luck!

Get the 36mm Datejust. You won't mind the size after a couple of days.

Please help - Which size 34 or 36 mm?
Wow, both look beautiful. My experience is that smaller is dressier. You can definitely pull off 34 or 36, depends on usage. Hard to wear the 34 sleeveless, but it will look nicer with cuffs and a jacket (my opinion).
When I was in my 20s, 32mm Rolex bubblebacks were all the rage for men. My big, blocky watches used to draw snide comments from people because stuff that looked 60s-70s was really badly out of style. Now, if you wear a 32mm watch it will look really odd, but a 44mm watch in the '70s style isn't considered especially big. You know what hasn't changed? The 36mm date just always looked great throughout those years, and it still looks great. Same for the submariner. Based on what you've said, I'd go for 36. Will last a lifetime no matter what styles do. But I have big wrists, and I wore a 34mm yesterday, and I think it was fine. |

Oh, one last thing — I was much skinnier when I was younger. My 34 looked better on me 20 years ago than it does now. If you really want it for life, 36 is likely to look better on you as you age.

i'd go with the DJ just because the case proportions are a bit better than that of the date IMO. the extra width makes the height less of an issue
