You could become an illinois state trooper, then after 26 1/2 years you retire. Your pension is 80% average of your best consecutive 4years, of your last 10. I know a recent retired seargeant getting 10k a month retired. He did work lots of overtime to pump up that salary, since it's averaged into your retirement. Then you get 3% compounded cost of living adjustment, every year after 55 years of age.

You beat me to it erp095. NYS Troopers average about 100k ,get some rank and ot and you'll reach your goal. I'm not far off on the FD.
If you get on the FD good pay , pension, and the time to do plumbing on the side , easily reach that number. I'd also be surprised if that pension is offered to new Troopers in Illinois , most states have added new tiers over the years , increasing length of service , cutting out OT counting towards it, eliminating colas and such. When I came on in '90 there were two tiers and was like that for a long time, by 2,015 there are 6! |

My plumber charges $95 / hr. + materials. So if you can bill for 8 hours a day, that's $760 / day, $15,200 / mo. If you can (a) keep your expenses below $5,200 and (b) bill for those 8 hours every day, you're there. Throw in some emergency service on the weekends and you don't have to worry about billing those 8 solid every day.
And yes, my plumber is expensive - the most expensive in town. He's also the most sought after and solidly booked because he does good work, shows up on time and cleans up when he's done. People will pay a premium for that after they've worked with the other guys a few times. |

What am I missing here...how did you come up with the 10k/month number? Is that your nut? If so, maybe you would be money ahead figuring how to reduce your living expenses...just a thought.

I started making a list of all the 'luxury' products that have probably made me less well-off than I should be... but then quickly stopped!

LISTEN to People!
People LOVE to complain! Just LISTEN when they do. Right AFTER you Listen, ask yourself: "is this a problem that I could solve for them?" "is this a common problem?" "what would it take to solve this problem for them?" "could I make 10k a month by helping them?" People make 10k a month All The Time by helping people solve their problems. You don't have to be the Only one doing this, you don't have to be the biggest one doing this... just do it a little bit better, somehow. Quicker delivery, friendlier service, better quality, whatever! Only concern yourself with "cheaper" if the market commands that! It may take a little while to get to 10k/month, but why stop there? Keep listening! Good luck! |

Let me make one thing perfectly clear.
Nowhere in this thread did I say that the OP should pay ME $25 for advice. I said that this method requiers a $25 initial investment and 4 days a month of work to reach the 10k goal which I would be happy to tell him. The OP then said that he would have to dig deep into his banking account for the initial investment and this was not something he was prepared to do. |
