Thank you for sharing. Very much agree with your assessment about everrose gold and wishing there were more dial combos!

Rolex Day-Date 40 - Modernizing a Classic

Great post. You can see how the DD40 is a faithful evolution of the classic DD, whereas the DDII seems to have gone in a slightly different direction.

I'm drooling... My favorite is RG but I don't want the batons dial. I hope they ever bring the Roman numerals with RG (maybe next year). Otherwise I will have to go with YG with the new Romans. Beautiful pictures... you're a very lucky man Eric!

Wow, thanks so much for the pics! I'm so interested in this watch and wish Rolex would publish the list of dials available for each metal.

I have only seen the one with the "cross pattern" you mentioned. Looks much better in person in my opinion.

Thank you Eric. Great report on the new Day-Date, now I will have to see it for myself. I still think we are safe with our classic 36mm. Most of my sports models are 40mm, so it won't sway me ( I hope).

Don't know yet. Really tempted with the DD 40, but still would love to get a YG GMT Master II or an Everose Gold Daytona. Now that all three are available at the same time, I really need to do some thinking.

Incredible pictures!! The DD II looks massive in the comparison photo! I felt it wore smaller in person than it appears on the side by side.

I do agree that the DD 40 seems to be the sweet spot!!

Thank you my friend. The pleasure was all mine.

No question, we are safe with our 36mm DD's as my other sport watches are 40mm's too. Currently on the fence about the DD 40. Only time will tell, but I must say, I am extremely impressed with the overall finished product and it is a watch that needs to be seen and worn.

Unfortunately, the selection of dials was limited at my AD yesterday. I really wanted to see the chocolate roman dial for the Everose Gold model. I am sure other dial combinations will trickle in over the next few weeks/months.

Eric, you should win a Pulitzer for this reporting, lol... Great thread and thanks for the great pics... For the record I love the diamond bezel, if it is factory of course, which this one was.

I appreciate the DDII so much more now that I actually see the side by side. with 1 mil difference I was worried there would be little contrast.
I originally owned the 36mm DD which was too dainty for my liking and now I'm fairly confident the DDII will still be a highly cherished model. The DD40 is indeed refined I'm glad there is distinction between the three. all three are amazing

Thanks for the pictures, Eric.

For me, it clearly displays again that the 36mm canīt be improved. The new DD40 however is much nicer than the bulky DDII.

For me, itīs the slim lugs of the orginal 1182xx which make the watch look so extremely elegant.

Thanks for the great comparison photos Eric.

I really like the proportions of the DD40, but I think I would prefer it with a "non-patterned" dial.

Dang, so the Au Day-Dates have finally crossed the $40,000 threshold with the 40mm, huh? I'm curious if the Pl DD40 will be past $70,000...

Loving this thread; the reporting, the pics and comparison. Many thanks Mr. E.
Looking forward to more pics and comments over time.

I have an appointment w the Tokyo AD in Ginza this weekend. The EverRose and the YG. They said ' No commitment to buy but my name is on both priority list on both watches'. Thanks Rolex for the reassurance.
I don't expect them to give any discounts whatsoever. This is Japan.

The noticeable difference in size was surprising for me as well as I would have expected there to be little difference between the DD II and DD 40. It is amazing what 1mm can do. The fact that the bezel of the DD 40 is more streamlined also makes the change more substantial.

I think this is a step back caused by market pressure and nothing else. The DDII is the more modern looking piece by far. The 40 looks too much like the DD; nice for those worried about a few mms. The II only one mm larger looks so much more modern. IMHO ymmv etc.

I greatly prefer the 40mm to the pimp-daddy DDII, which was clownishly large in my eyes.

Thanks, Felix.

I am with you on the fact the DD can't be improved, but the DD 40 definitely is worthy of serious consideration (at least for myself).

Thanks Julian.

The "patterned dial" is not my cup of tea either as I prefer the plain roman dials on the DD. It was too bad that they only had those three models available during my visit.

Thank you very much my friend.

I am sure you will be more than pleased when you see these beauties in person this weekend. Hopefully your AD has more dial combinations available than mine. Too bad about the non-existant discount in Japan. My brother-in-law who is Japanese also advised me of this many years ago.

Any chance they plan to update the original with the bracelet improvements that prevent the stretch?
