One thing to consider is the average weekly wage in the UK 1960 was £10 per week if you were in the right job.

The big question is if you wore a Rolex in the 60s was it considered a huge status symbol like it is today or was it just another the watch? Imagine if you could buy a sub today for $1000 and a Daytona for $1200. Every tom, dick and harry out there would be wearing one instead of the ones that they do right now that are from the flea market lol.

If I were 30s back in the 60s, and had idea of the now back then, I would have thrown all my earnings into Berkshire Hathaway shares! And with the $$$ earned from these shares, I can jolly well afford most vintage Rolexes even at the current opulence prices LOL

Very good thread here... :)

But even if you are making $15,000 a month today a sub is going to cost you 50% of your salary. It was still a bargain back then.

That means for 18% of his salary and in order to buy atvintage sub at today's prices, he would have to make at present $40k+ / month !!

Damn! that's load of $$$

Hell, I got into collecting watches in the late 90s, at that time you could pick up Daytonas for under a grand, double red seadwellers for under two grand.

I passed on many a mint day-date for under $5K because it was too much.

It's only recently that we've become comfortable paying so much for watches. ...although, that appears to be changing.

If anyone is going back to the 60's, I will pay you a little extra as a bonus if you could pick up a Rolex for me.

I wish the price of a new Daytona was 18% of my gross monthly salary. I could live on $55,000+ a month.

I bought my 6239 ca. '69 - '70 under pressure...lol
I was working for Bailey Banks and Biddle and my manager "forced" me to buy one
Back then we were sending them back to Rolex in exhange of two tone datejusts
Our employee discount was half price plus another 20-25% off from the importers profit.
I paid one and a half weekly salary

my dad was 24-25 when he bought his oyster royal in 1958. i recall him saying he most likely paid under $100 for it, and he got a leather strap included along with the attached oyster bracelet.
a week or so ago here in halifax, the replacement 78350 bracelet with 551 endlinks and 2 extra links cost me $1560 canadian(tax in)
dad told me he should have bought 20 of the watches in 1958. we laughed.
