That is an option, too. I am coming from "the bigger the better" camp in Panerai, so I'm getting used to these smaller (more reasonable?) sizes :D

Love the Daytona, but in this combination, no. I would go for the DDII.

When you mean this combination, do you mean Daytona w/ Blue VS. DD2 w/ champagne? Or do you mean the YG DD2 w/ Champagne as the "combination?"

Sorry for the confusion!

I worn my YG Daytona with the white dial and gold sub dials for more than 10 years and enjoyed it. I then bought a YG DD II with the white dial and gold roman numerals and from the time I put it on it was hands down the watch for me. Clean dial, case size, bezel, etc. I have also owned numerous SS Daytona's. While I admire the beauty of the Daytona and the history, for me, they wear a little small.

Daytona for sure!
The DD just has zero contrast; very dull in my eyes.
Maybe try a different combination if you really want the DD.

Go Daytona!

Without question Daytona. I am not a big yellow gold fan to begin with and I don't care for that DD2 dial at all. I think that Daytona will stay fresh over a long period of time.

I don't know anything about you, but the feeling that DD2 evokes to me is "non- classic version of an old man's watch" *ducking for cover*

I don't mean to offend anyone, this only MY personal feelings about it, but depending on your style it may totally work for you. Just not my cup of tea.

DDII for me, but then I am biased. I recently purchased a YG DDII with champagne baton dial. DDII has been discontinued by Rolex, and has been replaced by the Day Date 40, which has a new movement and is 1mm smaller. For me, the DDII was the better fit, and although I will likely never trade it, it is hard to think of a watch that Rolex has discontinued that hasn't held its value very well over the years. It may even appreciate.

Day-Date II. Especially if this is your first solid gold Rolex, the Day-Date is the way to go. There are very few solid gold Rolex references (in my opinion) that can beat the Day-Date, in any incarnation.

I can certainly sympathize with this statement. It's strange how much a difference 1 or 2mm can make.

YG w/ Champagne is about as close to "zero contrast" as you can get. I think I am drawn to that as it seems to be the most classic in my eyes.

I don't have the body type for a 36mm watch

I agree with you. Strangely enough, that is one of the reasons why I like it.... Haha.

...but hopefully not my last. I think 1 YG would probably be enough.

If they made those sub-dials match the gold case (like a champagne color), I would be very, very tempted.

Update:

I ended up trying on a lot of other variations of the watches, and the more I tried on Daytonas, the more I liked them. I was also having trouble buying retail so I went on the grey market and 2nd hand market. Flirted with WG for a while, too, but ended up with a 116528 daytona, yellow gold, mother of pearl dial with diamonds.

Oops :D :D :D :D :D

Thank you for all of the input. Looks like the DD2 won out in this previous poll, but the YG Daytona with pearl & diamonds....I couldn't say no.

You said that you're in business casual most days, so I would go Daytona. DDII would fit a little better if you wore a suit everyday, but the Daytona would be a better casual watch that fits business casual at work and shorts/t-shirt on the weekend.

Also, I think the blue dial beats out the champaign dial, but that's just me.

Good luck.

Purely visual, I'd go for the Daytona. The DD lacks contrast and as jewelry I prefer the Daytona with its more playful face and bezel...if it's DD I prefer the 36mm Plat/blue...

I had the same dilemma a while ago. I was between the RG Daytona with the chocolate dial and the RG DD2 with the chocolate dial. I ended up with the RG DD2 simply because to me, it is more of a classic and iconic timepiece. The DD is the quintessential Rolex, the granddaddy of them all...but again this is merely my opinion. You can't go wrong with either piece! And who knows, you may eventually end up owning both! Hang out on this forum enough and you will see how quickly your timepiece collection grows
Welcome, and I look forward to seeing your purchase!!!

You already have a daytona?

I'll be straight with you: Neither of those watches.

The blue daytona is rare, but there's a reason: Your daytona looks a lot better.

The DD2 you've chosen isn't the nicest yg one out there, as others have pointed out.

Look at a smurf (wg blue dial submariner), since you already have a yg daytona, or a two toned steel and yellow gold blue submariner. These are beautiful and add something very different to your collection. That, or a different dial DD2.
