If I were you, I'd go for the Sub, but SS and black dial. Second option: Explorer II polar.
The sub is a workhourse timepiece, but you shoud go for the SS reference (precious metals are less strong than SS); if you want more color you can go for the HULK, but you must be sure that the green will not bore you after a while. Concerning the Exp. II, consider that the steel bezel is relatively easily scratchable...

Exactly the reasons my EXP2 has hung around my ever evolving (OK, flipper's) collection as long as it has, Travis.

Explorer II, very rugged and can take a lot of punisment. It's my favorite and most worn of my watches.

G-Shock - and this coming from a tried and true GMT fan.
Of your choices though, the Explorer II (I prefer the Polar, especially in the new models); however, if you can do without the extra time zone hand and really want to talk rugged: the 214270 Explorer I 39mm deserves a look.

I agree with most here, the EXPII bezel won't pop off if you knock it hard against something. Also, the 40mm black dial versions are some of the cheapest out there right now in that league, very under appreciated.

Another vote for the Exp11, I think others have already given the reasons why!

The EXP II can withstand 500 years of rough-housing, the other 2 only 300 years... you definitely want to go with the EXP II.

I would consider the 39mm explorer 1, unless it's too small for you. It has the BCL's, non rotating bezel which cant foul up, or worse...pop off. If the bezel gets scratched you can polish it unlike the explorer II because of the black numbers on it. It has less flash to it and will go with any uniform or dress attire! Plus, with the money you would save over the other choices you can pick up a nice off duty glock and MANY rounds of ammo!

I have the Explorer II Polar 216570 & I've put it through all kinds of shit (once even literally) & it came through with flying, & accurate, colours. It has the Paraflex shock absorber & the Parachrom hairspring & is rated to 300 ft. The orange hand is also quite useful for keeping track of an extra timezone. It's hard to go wrong with this watch if you're going to be on deployment & need a watch to take all kinds of abuse & still keep accurate time. Plus it's also pretty enough & tough enough to be rinsed off with water & used with your dress uniform. I found the Polar (white) dial to be substantially more legible than the black; the hands stood out better & the internal reflections were far less noticeable (others, I know will disagree with that, but that's my experience). It's the most legible watch I've ever seen, with the exception of the Tudor Heritage Ranger. The 904L steel is much more likely to scratch than the crystal, but with all the banging around I do with my watch even the scratches on the steel are not bad & the crystal is as pristine as the day I got it. |

Explorer II as the bezel is WAY flatter and less likely to hit anything as well as the fact that the watch sits way lower than a Sub. 216570 in black or polar..can't go wrong.

I don't know how they compare with a G-shock, but overall those time pieces are pretty hardy. If function is not of concern i would consider the Exp II as i doesn't have a rotating bezel and if you don't like the black face look at the white one. As far as i read Prince Harry wore one while doing his 200-mile trek to the South Pole for Walking With the Wounded, an organization helping injured service members in the UK.

1. SubLV
2. GMT-C 3. EXPII 42 I have brought my GMT-C, EXPII, SubLV and DSSD on deployments (IZ, AFG, HOA, PHL, etc). All survived with no problem whatsoever. Likewise with my SMP Great White and SMP GMT. |

I have had a date just for thirty years and a gmt ii for twenty I've beaten the crap out of the date just and it still works like a champ. It's scratched and dinged and that's all good. I wore it in the field when I was a marine. Having said that I bought the gmt when I got my second watch for all the reasons you are considering. It's a great watch.
