OP. If you said white, Daytona all day.
Well, even black I would go Daytona. I am not a huge AP fan tho.

If I sold it now, I would definitely lose money, but nothing TOO drastic. If resale is a huge concern, I would buy a mint used one. Post an incoming thread when you get it, you won't regret it!

As JJ says, if resale value is at the forefront of your reason behind deciding which to purchase, then only buy the AP pre-owned or just go with the Daytona.
Not sure why you're asking for opinion on a basic 3-hander versus a chronograph – the two are chalk and cheese. You're better off deciding what type of watch you're after first, then narrowing down the list of candidates. On top of that, when you're at this level, you don't seriously just consider the RO solely – you've the Vacheron Constantin Overseas as a viable alternative too, both the 3-hander and the chronograph models. Those too would be best realised as pre-owned, but then I can't fathom why for a 1st watch you're going so high end or so sure it's inevitably going to be sold. Maybe you should start further down the ladder and get comfortable first, before climbing higher. |

Had both sold the AP due to size. Both awesome, but different as only watch I would go Daytona on being more robust

Ap
It's an icon. It's more than durable enough as an everyday watch. Servicing costs over 5-7 years are not much more than for a Rolex. If you can afford the watch you can afford the servicing. Ask an owner if you need more real world experience and details.

It's a tough choice, since both are iconic pieces. And I would definitely want to have both in the future.
My personal preference would be a white dial Daytona at this time. Reliability and build quality of a Rolex is beyond question. And it's of a lower price point than the AP. I personally prefer the white for its readability and there are only a few white dials as compared to black. But given the chance in the future, I would want to have both a white and black. As for the AP Royal Oak, I would go with the extra thin jumbo SS on blue dial over anything else. I would only consider a different dial color if it's on leather. But a SS would be a first option. |

Also, my Daytona servicing booklet states three to five year service intervals if memory serves, it is definitely not ten. If yours says ten, would you be so kind as to snap a pic and post it?

OK since you say it's gonna be your first watch I would encourage you to get a watch with a ceramic bezel, why? Because when you start this hobby you usually bump and scratch your watches not bad, I know I did, so with these 2 chances are they'll have the bezel, case and bracelet wasted in 1 year, for me these models are for people who have had watches for a long time and have developed "wrist awareness", my Patek after 1 year looks great, sure a few hairlines but not more, had I gotten it 25 year ago I would have killed it very quickly… If you still want one of these then the AP blue dial

Between the two I would pick the AP RO... plus for me a date window is much more desirable/useful than the chrono function...

I 'love' the Black SS Daytona, but I'd say... Forget both of your current options and go straight to the 15202 (even if that means saving a little longer to bridge the price gap).

IŽd take the ROO Chrono. It has the elegance, the superb finish and exclusiveness of an AP and it is sporty like the Daytona... Furthermore, it has a date function and it is waterproof up to 100 meters like the Daytona. Save a little more money and go for the new ROC with ceramic pushers.

Besides relative price, these two watches could not be more different IMHO. One is a traditional classic chrono, and the other a basic 3-hand in a highly stylized case. If you are after exclusivity, there are always watches more expensive and more exclusive. That quest becomes a never ending proposition depending on the crowd with which you rub shoulders.

I live here in the DC area and the Sub is almost common as the potholes in the winter.
I don't think it has anything to do with who "you rub shoulders with" I think it has to do more with the desire to own an iconic watch that is made by one of the big 3 manufacturers. Last edited by NoVaSubowner; 3 September 2015 at 05:32 AM.. Reason: Poster decision. |

Here's some enabling... If I had to let one go it would be the Daytona. Honestly, the AP is a step above in every aspect.

This one is staying if not forever, than a very long time. For the first time, I tied a watch to a milestone (two of them) in my life. I was inspired by your post awhile back about buying to keep, and the satisfaction of flipping is just temporary and minuscule. I really do feel this watch is perfect for every day. I am really just trying to build a 3 watch collection in the near future that will tide me over until I can go really big. AP 15400 - daily/work (own) Speedy - nights and weekends (subject to change if AP ever comes out with a SS diver with a ceramic bezel) JLC MUT Moon - dress/work
